All,

I have a friend that is very interested in purchasing a new 461 but slighly put off by the salon chart table concept.  Has anybody ever thought about an alternative layout to allow a chart table to be repositioned within the cabin more in keeping with a traditional look.

any inputs would be appreciated

regards

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Interresting topic.

I also have the same question/request and I used elctronics toys to draw my ptoject for the H461: this a 2 cabins layout with big chart table. This project uses existing elements as the chart table seat comes from the forward cabin and the single bank from the 2 beds forward cabin layout.

Have a look and come back on the forum. I am pretty sure there is a demand for such a layout.

Hi Guys,

Love the proposed two big cabin layout as shown above.

The 461 #1 we saw had the intruments simply placed on the face of the largest central port hand saloon locker.

We decided wanted our instruments hidden when at anchor - and a better viewing angle also when underway.  So came up with this idea of building an instrument face inside the orginal locker which we covered in grey leather.

We've since also changed the fittings of the locker 'door' so we can remove it completely when underway and simply clip it back when in port - plus added a fiddle rail on base to retain pencils / Ipod etc.

This layout works OK for us.  Only issue is aft saloon single seat does move when underway - especially if on port board.  Maybe the way these seats are held down has changed on subsequent models - on ours its a simply one wire and clip to a D on the floor?

But despite this one issue - we are happy to put up with that to get what we think are 'good looks' when the boats parked up at anchor or in port.  After all when cruising, we find that's perhaps 90 % of the time!

Cheers

JOHN

Hello everyone,

I just let you know that I've ordered a "461" yesterday at the boat-show in Dusseldorf.

It's a 3-cabin version (2 aft-cbins).

I still have some doubts concerning the keel. What to choose: 1,95m - 2,30m or the standard 2,60m ? I think with the 2,30m I'll have no problems with the dept in harbours...?

I ordered also a generator (Mastervolt 3.5 Kw) because the boat has no space for an additional alternator. I hope this is correct ?

For the instruments I choosed for the SIMRAD configuration and I think I will mount them like John showed above, hidden behind the panel.

My ears are wide open for any suggestion.

Regards,

Marc.

Hi Marc,

Congratulations on the order placement and of course - I think you've chosen the perfect yacht!

Have you decided on a name yet?

We have the 2.3M keel not by choice but because that was what they'd started to build and we wanted the yacht off the production line.  Have yet to hit the bottom with it despite 3,500 miles covered in past year and it goes just fine to windward.

It the Mastervolt an independent generator or a battery management system?  Either way I'd still suggest you ensure Yanmar provide the max 80 ah alternator on the engine (and check for I believe it is also still 80ah in the Hanse Spec) and not the 60 ah they put on our 461 #7.

Not sure what other suggestions you might wish to hear - but happy to pass comment or post photos of anything we've changed or added to Swagman that you may wish to see.

Cheers

JOHN

Hi Marc

Congratulations! You've made it!

On my side I would probably go for the 2.6m draft as my first goal is sailing! And my experience is that we always manage with harbours depths and <i think the ballast ratio of the 461 would work better with the 2.6m. But I wil test it sometimes later on this year.
What engine did you choose? 54 or 75 hp?
When will you get it?
Cheers

Hi Marc

What number will be your boat and what date of delivery are you expecting for?

Hello again,

Thanks for your interests.

The name of the boat will be "CARAMEL".

The Mastervolt generator is the "Whisper 3,5 Kw", an independent system. YANMAR told me that the new version of the 75 Hp, wich I choosed, has now an 80 ah alternator standard, but I think that's not enough.....(bow-thruster, winches, 2 cooling units.....).

I don't know yet the number of the yacht or the date of delivery.

Concerning the keel, I can say that sailing is for me also important but anchoring in a little bay is also enjoying life. Is 2.60M not to deep for that ?

Cheers,

Marc

HI Marc,

Good call getting the generator.

We've also got the truster plus two electric winches which led to the battery count rising to 8 and our 60 ah alternator on the 75hp Yanmar struggles to charge them all fully.

As we have two fridges plus tend to sail / anchor more than motor / marina, we've actually added a 9th battery to the bank.  It is a 120 ah wet cell just for the engine and we transferred the old 80 ah gel into the service bank making that now 5 x 80 ah gels.

As you'll see on other posts, we will be upgrading the 60 ah alternator to the 80 ah, and will be adding a Stirling or Mastervolt 'Smart' regulator to improve our charging rates when we visit the boat next month.

Re keel depth - Alain is obviously correct in that the 2.6 is sure to see the boat go to windward even better - but as we seem to beat everything of similar size on that point of sail anyway I'm not dissappointed with our 2.3m.  The deeper draft would also help the boat stand up better in very heavy breezes - if you see the article in Yachting World and the angle the journalist had Swagman sailing at - you'll understand what I mean.

On the other hand, and whilst we have not yet hit the bottom, we have certainly had to edge our way into some bays.  Notable shallow entrances this past year were at Lagos Marina plus the lagoon at Alvor in Portugal.  Also when anchored do like to snuck in as close to shore as we can (don't ask why - we just do) so loosing .3M actually helps us to do this.

Either way - great to see another one on the production line and lets hope one day we can see a 461 Cruiser Regatta somwhere to see how these differing keels effect performance.

Cheers

Hi Guys

About the energy management story, I would highly recommend the reading of a book named "Energy Unlimited" that you could find on the web site of Victron Energy: www.victronenergy.com.
Even I am at now a Mastervolt user, explanation regarding power supply and generation on board are, omho, very well explained.... and it is free. (the book of course not the gears!!)

To John
I remember that you offered to make a copy of Swagman electrical drawing available on request. Would it be possible to have one?
Thanks
