Hi,
I have a factory installed Lewmar windlass positioned just over the anchor locker. When a retrieve the anchor, once every metre the chain accumulates under the windlass instead of going directly down because the first receiving part of the locker is not steep enough to let the chain go down in vertical (chain is inox, which flows even better). So, every now and then, I need to clear the chain manually (annoying and not a safe thing to do) and then start again with electric remote recovery. Do you have the same issue and how you solve it? |

It is a common problem on many yachts, unless they have a really deep anchor, which of course takes up space from the forecabin area.
My normal practice is to stop hoisting it every now and then and knock down the pile with either my foot or a boat-hook. I aim to know when I am getting close to the point when the anchor will break out, so I can clear the chain pile then and then raise a lot of chain in to cut down the risk of dragging the anchor along the bottom and snagging it on something.

I have always had the same problem on Tangleberry, my 371. Knocking over the pile of chain has become second nature and I don't give it much thought.
If you have plenty of spare cash, you might try stainless steel chain. It is a slippery and might fall of its own accord. I have heard this is so but have no direct experience.

Perhaps there might be room for a ramp or wedge made of UHMW to lead the chain off the shelf. UHMW is very slippery stuff.
