    Posted: 16 November 2015 at 11:08
Hello to all.
I have a Hanse 385 since this spring, and between several issues, one issue looks fundamental and the reseller says it has no answer: the chain ancor is 50m long (that is a minimum from my point of view) and when the anchor winch pull the chain, recovering the anchor, the chain rises under the winch and blocks it, if one does not push the chain down permanently with the hands or with feets. Is is quite unconfortable, somewhat dangerous, for the person, and also for the boat as it make the removal of the anchor slower. It could probably work a 25m chain, but not for 50m. It is due to the fact that the winch is on the side of the chain well, and too low. Is there somebody who solved this question by a mechanical arrangement?
I thank you in advance.

I think this is normal with a lot of chain. It also happens on my boat. Stop the winch and push the chain down with a boat hook works for me.

Echoofwight,
IMO it is not. In the Med you need with a 38 feet time to time 50 meter or more chain
In a emergency ,in the Med on anchor with sternmooring lines on the rocks during the night with gusts on your side a
dragging anchor and single or with only 2 people on board, this is what's you can miss like pain in the a.. I can tell you by experience.
One of the big advertising slogans of Hanse" easy sailing short handed " and on every anchor winch manual the factory's tell you that you must take attention the chain can run free.
Once again the proof that designers and builders of the last decades have more attention too how the boat looks at the bootshow and not on the handling.

Do a search on the total Hanse forum and you will find that this is a common problem discussed a few times over the last 8 years. Here's one owner's solution

Others have installed pieces of metal to provide a steeper ramp under the windlass.
I've not done a thing, just got used to standing in the anchor locker moving the chain as I raise the anchor...

Yes we do too, we have 60 meters of chain and sometimes wish we had more in some crowded bays in turkey. Cathie stands in the locker and pushes the chain with her foot (stops the windless every time she does it). Buy some cheap crock lookalikes for this or you will ruin your shoes

Hi,
I tried to lift the winch as much up as possible with additiona wooden basement under it. Then I added a stainless steel slope for the chain to slide forward. No improvement. Then I built exactly similar system than in Rubato's link and it works fine now.

Before I got my Hanse, I crewed a few times on a friend's Halberg Rassy 46 in the Med and on a trip back to Scotland.   Even on that supposed "quality" boat, I always had to kick the chain or use a boat hook to stop it piling up.   Just be safe, stop the winch when you put anything in the anchor locker.  And yes, I did have to do it at 0200hrs in the dark as we were dragging the anchor and heading for some rocks.   Hence why I added a a steaming/deck light immediately I purchased my boat.

Common Hanse problem.
Hanse keeps making chain bay as part of the deck and so loosing much of the otherwise available height and space. Problem is caused mainly from the height (or the lack of it) between the windlass and the top of the chain pile.

You can either live with it and keep pushing the pilling chain forward from time to time.

Or you can cut the locker bay all around and let the chain pile on the inside of the hull. There are 20cm in height and more space all around that can be used. In this case you should make a bulkhead to isolate cabin from anchor bay.

I had exactly the same issue on my 370. 50m chain, allways blocked.

The solution was a stainless pedestrial for the winch, glued with sika and fixed with some screws in the locker. That worked absolutely perfect an below the winch there was enough room for 4 fenders and one flat fender.
