Hi, hoping someone has some advice, our hand held H50 VHF radio has stopped working again. First time it was under warranty and they just replaced it. Now the warranty has expired, so am trying to find out if it a problem with the charger or the unit. I have checked the fuses and connections etc, but how can you check if the conductive base plate charger is working as it looks like you would have to break it open to check the connections inside it?
Any advice would be most welcome

Paul,

I would be interested to hear what you find out because I have just checked my remote hand held for the B&G V 50 and ours is likewise not working. I have checked and there is voltage getting to the charger unit but that is as far as I have got. I appears the hand held is completely dead - no battery life at all. It has been is the charger bracket since we arrived at our wintering marina in mid October and the power to all the B&G instruments has been on for that period. We use the fixed VHF about 5 days a week but not the hand held.

Charging base failure is a known problem for B&G. Every one I know with one, including myself has had one replaced. I have two charging bases on my boat, one at the helm and one at the Nav station. The base that I have had problems with is the Nav station base which the remote sits in unless we go sailing. What I have found is the base gets very hot and then fails. Now I only sit the remote in a base if I am sailing and the remote in switched 'on'. I do not leave the remote in a base if it is not switched 'on' . Since doing this I have not had a problem. I think if the remote sits in the base for a pre longed time, the heat kills the base. Even though your unit is out of warranty I would be hitting them up for another one as this is a known problem. The other problem you will have with the handset is the transmit button failing. The switch behind the rubber transmit button is only a little micro switch attached to the electronic board by its tinny soldered terminals. If you press the transmit button too hard the switch will break off. B&G replaced my complete hand set which so happened to include a new charging base, so I now have a spare base when my next one fails. I am going to put some epoxy putty on the switch to try an give it a bit of strength as I think it will only fail again. Just make sure you do not press the transmit button to hard.

Paul,

I sent our dead B&G VHF handheld and charger back to our dealer and they are replacing the charger under warranty. The B&G equipment has a three year warranty. The local B&G retailer was not so keen to get involved but Inspiration Marine were only too happy to sort the problem out for us.

Thank you both for your replies and advice. Latest update is that I took it up with B&G direct and they have agreed to a free replacement so hopefully all will be working again soon. I will take the advice regarding only charging when on and hopefully the new set will last longer than the first two!

I dont leave the handheld on the charger. Mainly to avoid unnecessary current drain and chargers are notorious for breaking down unless the electronic components are high specification.

Have had the same problem with the charger, was replaced under warranty. B&G has a three year warranty? thought it was only 2?
