Following on from Samuel's suggestion, I've immediately started this topic and would like to invite as many Hanses as possible to join Samuel in St Peter Port, Channel Islands, to partake and relieve him of his Lidl Malt, in the Mother of all pontoon Parties.

My present thinking is to be there around the final week of June and I expect to go via Cherbourg to pick up some Malt for when Samuel's half bottle has gone.

Can you join us? Any suggestions from anyone?

Charles

I think Beaucette marina is a bit remote to the town centre & one has to pass through a slightly industrial area to get to the town centre so I admit I have never tried it. The main marina near the town centre ( Victoria I think)has been said to be noisy because of boy racers speeding up & down the main road but I think that has been stopped
Also various events take place which adds to the atmosphere, ie harbour sports, manned unpowered flights off the dock wall, plastic duck racing( great for the grandson), wet T shirt dinghy paddling ( great for the men!!) & even a bike race around the harbour & island. & of course SWMBO can access the shops more easily whilst the male members can enjoy the pubs & club
If sailing the area St Helier is more commercial, St Malo is worth a visit & good for walks etc & Granville is nice if you can get a berth ok. Lezardrieux is really beautiful as the sun rises & I am told Treguier is similar. I am not into anchoring but am told some of the anchorages are good .All in all a great place to sail with a few challenging tides & navigation capped by interesting destinations
I used the Imray pilot of the area which I found Ok & the Tom Cunliffe Channel Pilot has some info & is possibly more use to those cruising the whole Channel area

We also are planning our trip to the Channel Islands starting as of July 18, 2015, out of the south of the Netherlands.

A good nautical book for the area is, North Brittany And Channel Islands Cruising Companion, by Peter Cumberlidge.

Alderney (Braye Harbour) is worth a visit as long as the wind is not from the NE. There often seems to be a swell in this harbour when we visit, but it does not bother us; just ensure you have a couple of good lines attached to the visitors buoys because of chafe from the swell which also rebounds off the harbour wall. It is a small and quaint place and very friendly, with spectacular coastal walks. From Cherbourg, it is an easy 4 to 5 hour sail, but choose the correct time to leave Cherbourg Fort de l'Ouest which is about 4.5 hours before HW Dover. (If going down the Race to Jersey, leave Cherbourg at 3.5 hours before HW Dover.) At these times, there is supposed to be a favourable west-going eddy close inshore between Cherbourg and Cap de la Hague, but I have yet to find it.
