Re the west going eddy from Cherbourg
I once did the trip in very windy weather. The trip through the race was somewhat worrying as we went a bit near Cap de laHague & the seas tend to curl like a breaking wave on the beach. 4 metre waves like these can easily roll a 311 However, it was very rough in the inshore bit between Cap de la Hague & Cherbourg & inspite of the tidal advantage I saw a bigger yacht further off shore & that did not have anything like our seas inshore. From being inshore we then failed to get far enough out past Cap de la Hague. So much so that we turned back due to the curling waves. I stood on the deck & watched the other yacht & saw it was having a better passage further offshore. My crew were close to mutiny but I had another go but got further offshore before turning through the race. So if using the inshore passage remember it can be rougher & lead one to turning through the race too quickly. I imagine one might do this if going to Jersey instead of Guernsey I was told not to do the race over F5 & it was a good F6 so the second time we attempted it we motored & just pointed into the breaking waves at 2-3 kts & let the tide carry us through the race sideways but head to the breaking waves. Side ways on we would have been rolled for sure Edited by samuel - 19 April 2015 at 16:55 |

You certainly like to live dangerously, Sam. I would prefer to enjoy the delights of Cherbourg until a friendly F3 or 4 came along. My recollection is also of rough waves inshore.
Have you been to Jersey in recent years. I've never sailed there, so wonder what the marinas are like. Charles |

Last went 2012
Personally I am not a fan of the more commercial aspect of St Helier although a trip on the bus across the flooded causway to the castle is a good day out. They do a good talk on how to load and fire a cannon that must not be missed, if only to get showered in burning wadding The harbour is Ok, you motor in through a lot of rocks etc & moor up on the waiting pontoon. The harbour masters go through all the pre tie up bits. when I went last I was waiting with a couple of boats from Benfleet YC. I was worried about there being room as quite a few boats turned up but the harbour master assured me that they have had 100 boats to get in at one time & manage it. I had copper coat antifoul so needed slipping & cleaning mid season ( I lay up in the winter as well !!!) I went ( quite a long walk but worth it) to the YC & on enquireis I was put in touch with the retired RNLI coxswain - Billie Hibbs- who arranged a 1 hour haul out & jet wash for £ 180-00. Seemed odd being taken on the travel lift up the road for the washing area So worth a look & friendly people esp in the YC ,but not as good as St Peter Port You have to wait for water depth over the cill to leave. it can be very rough off pointe de Corbiere ( think that is the name) my daughter wanted to go back & get the ferry-!!!! I have also done St Malo from there & Granville is worth a visit Edited by samuel - 19 April 2015 at 18:24 |

Samual,
I cannot give you exact dates, as I am in the hands of a repair yard, DD is looking at coming out of the water for some gel coat repairs beginning of May for two weeks, but you know boat yards..... 2 weeks to them could easily be 3-4 weeks. The idea is to be on my Barmouth mooring middle of May and check her out and set of towards the end of May south, calling into Lundy, the Scillies then along the South Coast then a hope across so I would think towards the middle of July or so. Just a point to look at with deep keel Hanse's the main marina in St Peter Port has a depth of 1.5 mts in most parts of the marina. Unless it has been dredged recently ??
The open harbour has walk ashore pontoons but gets noisy with ferries coming in and out. After a bad experience there we go to Beaucette its only £1 for an all day bus ticket to anywhere in the island. Its also knocks an hour of our sail time from Salcombe by entering via the Doyle passage. Ken

Re: Depth in SPP
The conversation with the harbourmaster went something like "... how deep are you? 2m. OK no problems raft up here..." As the photo shows the harbourmaster was more than a little apologetic the following morning. I saw the funny side and no harm done
