You are correct - gassing occurs when the batteries are overcharged. With non-sealed (e.g. wet lead acid) the gasses (hydrogen and oxygen) can be released into the air and are potentially explosive. If the battery compartment is well vented (like the starter battery in the engine compartment) gassing should not be a problem, but the batteries will need topping up with water periodically. However, it could be a problem for the service batteries (e.g. those under the navigator's seat on the 400/415). Providing adequate ventilation would not be difficult, though, and boats exploding from inadequately vented batteries are pretty rare! However, you are right to mention this as it should not be ignored.
