Hi Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has experienced a loud "pop" that sounds like a circuit breaker resetting? I have noticed it at about 4am several times, and it sounds like its coming from the area of the breakers/nav station. Ive checked all my systems and they seem fine. Has Anyone experienced anything similar.

Hi Bruce

I wonder if it is the Sterling VSR (voltage sensitive relay) dropping out?

The relay drops out when the voltage of the service battery bank drops below a preset value (some thing like 12.8V).

The unit is the big red box with several LEDs behind the service batteries under the navigator's seat. The LEDs indicate whether the relay is open or closed, the type of battery etc.

If the batteries have been on charge (mains or engine) and charging then stops, the relay will remain closed until the voltage has dropped to the 12.8V level. The time taken for this depends on the current being drawn from the service batteries once charging has stopped and can be several hours if the current draw is small.

Does that fit your scenario?

Hi Roger, that sounds like it could be the issue.

Do you happen to know whether the VSR relay cycles while on shorepower as well (Im slowly learning these systems) as the relay sound happens whilst we are connected to shorepower.

Many thanks for the insights.

Hi Bruce

I wouldn't expect the VSR relay to cycle when shore power is connected, unless the battery charger is not charging properly or the VSR is not set up properly. There are time outs built into the VSR to avoid it dropping in and out when charging starts or stops.

Can you take some voltage readings with the built in panel meter, or, better still with a hand held multimeter? If so, take the voltage of the engine, service and bow thruster (if fitted) batteries at the following times -
1. When shore power has been connected for an hour or two.
2. Immediately after shore power has been disconnected.
3. After any 'clicking' event when the relay may have just changed state.

We may be chasing the wrong thing here but the above measurements should give us a bit more relevant info.

One further thought - could it be the fridge cycling on and off? The compressor has a relay that can also be heard when everything else is quiet and that will click on and off regardless of whether shore power is connected or not. It just cycles dependent on the temperature inside the freezing compartment.
