I am just looking to fit a full cockpit cover on my 341 and wondering what you other guys have done? I have a quote for £2200 including a new spray hood. Has anyone tried the habitent option? What should I be asking for when specing a new one.
Thanks Tipsy 🍷 |

Since you are based in
the UK, get a proper cockpit tent and over the years you will never regret
having spent the money on it. It is very rare that we do not put ours up
and are thankful for it. We reckon we can get it up in a couple of
minutes if a shower is due.
As to the design. Keep it
simple. We use the standard spray hood that came with the yacht when we
bought it when it was 6 yrs old and our sail-maker installed a zip on it to
which is fastened the cockpit tent. The tent was designed that my
wife can stand up in it, but everybody else has to keep their head, but this
does keep the boat looking in proportion. The frame is fastened to the
side-deck with quick release fittings, has a second support frame and has
centre joints so that it can be split in two, if you want to put it away. In
fact we never take it off and the photo shows this.
The cockpit tent is a one piece, with 2
zips inside for the frame and 3 opening doors. The tent is held down by a
mixture of straps in key positions and shock cord hooked over studs.
Ours was made by Saturn Sails at Largs as we are based there, as really there hare custom made and fitted to the boat. It was not cheap, but as we said, it was worth the money. I suppose they could quote you based on them supplying the parts and you fitting it. |

Mine was made by CJ Marine in Chichester and they give an on-line price for a spray hood and cockpit enclosure. The pictures of the 341 on their site are actually my boat. The quality is excellent and I completely agree with Martin and Rene on the benefits.
I think you price you have been quoted looks very good and I would prefer to use a local company in case of any issues. Whatever way you go you won't regret getting a cockpit enclosure. Steve |

I have looked at the CJ website and it looks pretty good, so I would certainly give them a call so check the feasibility of them supplying the parts and having them fitted at your location. It is the sort of money that I would expect to pay so use their spec as a comparison. We have to remember that the spray-hood and cockpit tent are up for 6-9 months in sun (good for us, bad for fabrics) and strong winds and rain (bad for us and fabrics) so they take some hammer. One option I like on their site is the high performance thread option, which looks expensive, but over the years we have started to have our cockpit tent needing some resewing as the threads wear out.
We have seen some people have lightweight fabric options that roll up onto a fixed frame, but they actually seem to take longer to roll it up than it does for us to take our tent down. We use a shower scraper to wipe the windows dry and it is amazing how quick dew (if you are lucky) or overnight rain dries in a morning. We normally roll our cockpit tent fabric up and you mst be able to do this without creasing the windows too much. As we normally sail just in the day we store the tend fabric in its bag behind the saloon table, making sure we keep the vent holes for the fridge compressor clear. (See http://www.myhanse.com/fridge-comprressor-cooling_topic7850_post61459.html?KW=fan#61459 though now the fan blows the air out into the saloon) If the fabric is wet, we tie it on top of the cabin garage. Out standard practice is to drop the spray-hood when entering harbours etc so that we have good visibility, so check this is going to be easy to do. Perhaps I am lucky on the cost aspect, as it was my wife who insisted that we bought one when we bought the yacht and she has always considered it an excellent purchase. Happy crew = happy sailing. If you want I will try and take some detail photos when I am next on the yacht in 2 weeks time. |
