Just returned from our delivery cruise up to Arisaig.Weather was mixed but we had a glorious day leaving the Sound of Mull and rounding Ardnamurchan Point (See Photo). After the confines of the Sound the panorama magically expands to reveal the Small Isles , Skye , Coll. If you haven't been into Kentra Bay at the east end of the Ardnamurchan peninsula I would recommend a visit. We spent 3 nights here with the backdrop of dunes, forest and hills with virtually no people as the nearest road is miles away. The bottom is firm sand with no weed and the typical depth is around 6-8m.Sheltered from east/south/west. If any north comes to play a short trip up to Loch Ailort provides ideal shelter with equally good holding. Happy summer voyages. |

We have just seen that they have decided to stop the Assisted Passage scheme on the Crinan Canal that was available for any boat that was travelling through with two or less people on board. We think this is a terrible decision and judging by how many boats were using the scheme last year we cannot see how they can claim it was uneconomic. We think it is time to do some writing to MPs, councillors etc as well the Canal team to try and get this decision reversed. Any supporters out there?

that is bad news indeed..I will speak to the Canal harbour master about this..... I have been using the Canal since before the assisted passages were introduced and when I was shorted handed they managed to find staff to assist and follow me thro'.... This is a concern and I am with you Martin & Rene... it is a retrograde step... It would be interesting to see the passage figures before, during and after
It does need pushing to the powers that be, but we also have to be mindful of the extra costs that this does put on the Charitable Trust that the Canals are now in. Dave |

That is indeed bad news. The canal staff were very good with us last year when we passed through the canal in gale force winds, despite us having a crew of four they assisted us most of the way without being asked. On the Forth and Clyde Canal which takes 2 days to negotiate they always assist your passage with 2 teams leapfrogging each other on the Glasgow stretch in order to give you a quick journey... total cost under £40.
I haven't tried taking the Hanse through the Forth and Clyde but here is a picture of my old Centaur on her way through.
