My prop shaft dripless seal is dripping.  It is a PSS type with only a few seasons of light use. So, the plan was to simply adjust the compression by sliding the collar aft to a tighter seal.  When the collar was loosened and moved, we were surprised to see grooves machined in the shaft.  See the photos.

Why are these here?  Looking at them closely, they appear to be intentionally machined into the shaft.  The problem is that we are afraid that we will cut the O rings inside the collar when we slide the collar over the grooves.  We won't know if the O rings are cut until we put the boat in the water to check for leaks...and if they are leaking, then we will need to haul out again.  We will be installing a new PSS seal.

Does anyone know about this seal and these grooves?

Hi Rob. I would guess those grooves served as a reference mark to locate the rotor during assembly of the drive train. I think if you sanded them smooth with some 400 grit paper and the soaped up the shaft you would be good to go. The O rings in that rotor a pretty tough. Make sure you have about one inch of compression on the bellows. That should do it. Also make sure the face of the rotor is clean.
