Does anyone know if the 470's all have epoxy hulls, or if epoxy is or was an option that could be excluded? I am looking at a 2010 470 to purchase and it is not certain if the hull is epoxy or not. It does not have the "e" after the "470" on the hull. I have heard that smaller versions did not use the "e" religiously, so I'm uncertain what the deal is.

Thanks,

470e means epoxy hull and 470 without e means polyester hull. Same like 370 / 370e.
all hulls smaler than 370 are only polyester.

As far as I know the late Hanse 470 (2010-2012) without E where build in Vinylester and not Polyester. I think in the end there wheren't even the possibility to buy the boat in Epoxy.

All earlier boats where from Epoxy, I think until 2009.

At later boats is the 1st layer (outer skin) a vinylester resign. All other layers are polyester resign.
Hanse use this design now in all new boats with balsa sandwich core (315, 348, 388 until 548).
Hanse 575, 588 and 675 have Vinylester for all outer laminates( until balsa core). Inner layer is also polyester resign.

I had a an epoxy hull Hanse (400e) and it certainly seemed a very stiff boat. And as Steve (Rubato) has pointed out significantly lighter than the standard hull. Greater care was needed when being laid up ashore to avoid damage to the epoxy hull though - a minimum of 6 supporting pads for the boat cradle. For my next Hanse (455) the epoxy option wasn't available - only vinylester. I would have opted for epoxy had it been offered.

There's a link to a short & informative summary of the differences between the materials here:

Thanks for that link! :-)
I will NEVER change to an other boat.

The only drawback with epoxy is that it is a little noisy. The thin, stiff hull makes a good resonance box.

I purchased my used 470e from a Hanse dealer in Sidney BC and they said epoxy was a $50k option on the 470.
