My wife and I have been sailing for over 30 years and recently built a new 575. Just before we left on a 3 week vacation, we were anchoring for the weekend in Newport harbor as part of a "know thy boat" series of overnights. Anchoring in Newport is always "south of the cable crossing, north of the mooring field". We were more than 100 yards south of the cable crossing.
In the morning, when we went to pull up our anchor, I thought the QUICK windlass had died because it strained and then stopped. I had to hook a line to the chain via a snubber hook and pull the anchor up with the cockpit electric winches. What I found were two underwater cables (not *THE* cable that is active, some old cables left on the bottom when replaced by the new one) hooked on our shiny new Ultra stainless anchor. We had to run a dock line from the bow cleats to the cables, have the dock line take the weight while we dropped the anchor and then brought it up again (free this time), and then release the dock line from one side (a lot of strain on that dock line). Once the dance was complete, we were free. In 30 years nothing like that had happened. First time anchoring with the Hanse, bang. :-). Hopefully we just expended our quota for anchoring crises for the next 30 years. |

Rick,
Most of the time on the town quays in the Med where you often get crossed chains it is not uncommon to raise your anchor and find another boats chain over your anchor. We have seen one boat with three chains on his anchor in one port in the northern Aegean. Over here you can buy a "C" shaped anchor chain tripping devise which are worth its weight in gold but only cost about Euro20.

ULTRA offers that hook shaped devise too. I assume you can order it by their US offices.

Crossed anchor lines/chains happen all the time here, too, but usually on really crowded weekends or special events (like people watching the fireworks in the harbor). People try to drop where they shouldn't drop and its a mess when they leave because they pull up your anchor and several others..
Not sure i understand how that device works. A picture would help, or a link to a web page for it. Rick |

This is the link to the ULTRA hook. You can see there the description how it works. |

If you look at the thickness of the cables, its doubtful the device would actually hook the cable and pull it up. It would, however, work on anchor chain or rode. Thanks

Rick,
We looked at buying a Ultra Trip hook but the cost was "Ultra" expensive. I see West Marine sell them in the US at US$140 for the standard size and US$347 for the large size. We ended up buying one which is stainless steel from Moor Tool in Europe for about Euro24 plus freight and it works fine. We love our Ultra Anchor but the costs of most of the Ultra equipment is eye watering.

The larger size hook would work. You won’t pull the cable out with the hook, you will just keep the cable in the hook while you drop your anchor. You just need the right size of rope.
