I picked up my new boat from the shipyard in Greifswald on 19.5.2016. After
one week Baltic Sea and 3 days North Sea it was only in fresh water (in the IJsselmeer,
Markermeer and Nordseekanal) on the way.
Overall, it was 8 months in the water and has been exactly 611nm totaly moved. On 3.Feb.2017 the boat was then taken out of the water and now stands in a hall. I am disappointed at the condition of the underwater vessel and I wonder if this is normal. My dealer says this is normal and gives me the advice to redo the underwater paint every year. What is your opinion ? |

That is not normal in the least. There shouldn't be any peeling of the paint at all. It's true, some bottom maintenance of some kind (touch up, etc) is totally normal but the paint shouldn't be peeling. I believe that either the bottom wasn't prepared properly for the paint used or there was something wrong with the paint.

I am not sure if this is the antifouling what is peeling of. If so than there is a problem with the preparation as rubato mentioned.
One Question: Was your boat only taken out of the water without high pressure cleanng. Normally t is standart to clean with a high pressure cleaner, if you pay for it ;-) The green stuff looks as if it was not cleaned. Maybe this is only dryed algae or Algae mucus peeling of...... A anually painting of the antifouling s normal! Edited by Peter-Blake - 02 May 2017 at 17:16 |

My boat was taken out of the water because of a damage by a neighbourship. It was not cleaned anyway.

Looks to me that preparation and primer were incorrect or missing, antifoul peeling like this indicates poor adhesion.

It is of course normal to re apply antifoul every year. however, if the dealer says the peeling is normal ask him to show you another boat in the yard with the same condition.

This is not normal and antifouling in fresh water should last 2 or 3 seasons. I would claim the paint removal and new antifouling to your dealer without hesitation. Do you have an anti-osmosis protection on your hull? Non-compatible antifouling paint layers may react the same way.

If this is indeed the antifouling that is flaking it is not correct. I have never seen anything like this however I think it is more likely that this is the slime / marine growth that has dried on and is now peeling in the warmer environment of the hall. In future I would recommend you pressure wash the hull as soon as it comes out of the water - it is much easier to get the growth off when wet. This is normal practise at most boatyards (although you will have to pay extra for it).
This is how Ningaloo looked after liftout at the end of last season. I had a pressure wash but no other preparation at this stage. Incidentally, Hanse are not responsible for antifouling new boats. This is done by the dealer that you purchased through. They should have discussed this with you and given you a certificate of the materials applied. I had 5 coats of primer and 2 of antifoul (Hempel Mille NCT) as part of my commissioning package. Last spring (after our first season) I applied another very thin coat (one 2.5l tin with diluted with 0.75l thinners) of the same antifoul. As you can see the hull is very clean. For those who might question my parsimonious use of antifoul, l I should point out that my usage pattern is an intense 3 months during the summer when the boat moves most days. The remainder of the year, the boat is ashore.

Hi Ida
That's not anti foul that's peeling off. It's either a completely wrong paint or dried slime. Even if the hull wasn't primed, I've never seen anti foul behave like that. It usually flakes off in patches if its got no adhesion. If you're suspicious it's the wrong paint send a sample to a lab or maybe International Paints and ask them to analyse it. |

Thanks to all. I am unsure now whether it is really the antifouling that peels off or if it is a biomucus as you suspect. Since I have 4 hours to drive to my boat I can not quickly check it.
After clarifying the problem, I will report on this forum. |
