Hey! The 312 is not a snail!!! :( Here in Lisbon I run with my 312 against several 31.7 and they have similar performances. It's usual to get SOG of 7-8kn with a 140% genoa and main sail with 20-22kn of apparent wind. The maximum SOG that I remember was 12kn at the sea. Probably with 2-3kn of current and waves in the same direction and about 25kn of downwind. All this with a clean hull, of course. One year after cleaning the hull I'm losing around 1kn (4-5kn instead 5-6kn). Much more important that change for new sails is to clean the hull as often as you can.

That really can be worth up to half a knot in certain conditions & over a long trip that can equate to a fair bit of time |
