The electrically driven ram on our 2013 Bow Thruster stopped working when an internal sensor failed. This was the Mk 1 version fitted to the first 415s. Due to failures of one kind or another a Mk 2 version of the ram & control box was fitted later.
I obtained a new ram & control box which I fitted in July. There was nothing wrong with the original electronic control box but the Mk 2 version is easier to set up and I needed this facility due to lack of technicians in the northern Aegean. If anyone is interested in having a spare control box I’m happy to supply it for 50€ inclusive of shipping in Europe. |

What were the symptoms of the failed ram? My thruster deploys and drives ,eft and right but won’t retract, just flashes 4 times on the red led on the control box.

In my case the ram did not move and so the whole thing appeared dead. To be honest I can’t remember what LEDs were flashing on the control box. On the control panel the red & green arrows flashed together and the yellow LEDs were permanently on. To stop all these I had to use the battery isolator switch to cut the power to the control system. Quick recommend that you have a switch to do this & that the system is isolated when underway. I have done this.
I suspect that one of the sensors in your ram has failed and it may need replacing. If you contact Mauro Bera in the technical departement at Quick Italy he may be able to advise what routines you can run to identify the fault. It sounds as if your control box is fine as was mine. He advised me to change both as they have an upgrade kit & the box & ram are ready wired. There is a minor modification needed to the wiring connections on to the relays. If you go down this route I have full instructions with photos of what to do & I could talk you through the procedure. The new parts cost 1150€ with shipping. You have to order through an agent as Quick will not supply you direct. My new parts worked immediately without problem. However as we lined up to reverse in to our winter berth it fail to operate. It deployed but the motor did not run. The relays operate and it retracts so obviously the motor is the problem. The U.K. distributor says the motor cannot be repaired & a new one is £1550 without shipping. I’m going to investigate whether it can be repaired here in Sicily. There are U.K. companies who specialise in rewinding motors & repairing armatures so it has to be possible in Italy. |

Mark,
I gather you have read the thruster manual - it lists the description for the LED Error light on the thruster flashing 4 times as - "Actuator command line interruption: The problem is signalled when the board detects an interruption in the command power lines of the actuator. Verify the wiring of the power lines from the board to the actuator." Good luck!

Hi Wayne, in my manual 4 flashes is described as ‘low absorption of the actuator during ascent or descent’, which is a terrible translation of the Italian I assume, and I’m not quite sure what it means? Best I can do is low current, but what am I supposed to make of that? And how could I fix it?

Hello Nigel, can you remember the part numbers for the ram and control box? I recon you should be able to repair the motor, they do it here in turkey no problem.

Before I would believe that the motor is at fault I would want to check that the motor is actually receiving full voltage when it should. It is often the control unit or associated relay that fails rather than the motor itself.
It would be worth doing some simple voltage checks at the connections to the motor before condemning it. If in any doubt connect the motor (momentarily) directly to its battery with some thick wire. If it doesn't rotate then it is most probably faulty. BTW (for Mark) my Quick manual reads exactly as Wayne's above for 4 flashes.

The ram (actuator) & control box are new. The Thruster deploys & retracts. When deployed the relays operate for both directions. The power fuse is not blown so I think it’s fair to conclude that the motor is at fault. Does anyone known the fuse rating as I want to buy a spare & I’m no longer near the boat to check? I’m getting a technician to check out the motor and effect a repair if possible & needed.

Understood. However, for the time it takes to check that the motor is actually receiving voltage I would want to do that check before engaging a contractor to do it for me. Relays can sound as though they are operating but the contacts are not necessarily passing the required current, there may be a hidden fuse that has blown or the associated battery may be flat. The motor itself would be the last thing I would suspect, especially if it had been working faultlessly beforehand.

I have no choice as the boat is in Sicily & I'm in France. I may not get back to it until April/May & I'll need it working by then.
Will post again when I know what the problem is & it's solution.
