Hi All,
I need to replace my mainsail Halyard (& sheets) immediately bit others will need doing soon. Can anyone give me sizes for the lines on a 10 year old Hanse 350 - please. I think the mainsail is 10mm but....... I can't find chapter and verse anywhere. The existing halyard is hard and has serious damage (as of Monday) about 3m for the sail. Thanks in anticipation. Andy

The halyards on my 371 for jib and main were 12 mm which was a bit large for the blocks. Now have 10MM Dyneema main halyard which runs much freer.
I wouldn't worry about the original sizes too much. just choose what is appropriate for a boat that size. A rigger should be able to advise. One warning. I replaced my 8mm pole lift with a new one, and it slid through the clutch with no holding at all. It was a very soft lay which you could flatten with your fingers. I had to replace it with a harder one of the same diameter which holds fine.

On my H355 (with Selden mast although) original halyards are 10 mm (immediately swapped for Dyneema).
If I have to replace them, I'd rather go for 8 mm Dyneema (lighter & cheaper). Quite enough for this sailforces. Just add a sleeve where the jammers lock the rope to avoid slipping.

Hi Andy,
These were the sizes of the halyards and the sheets of my H 350 (built 2010): Main halyard: 10mm Main sheet: 12mm Jib halyard: 10mm Jib sheet: 10mm Spi halyard; 10mm I swapped both the Main and the Jib halyards to 8mm Dyneema. I am very satisfied with that. One issue: the spinlock jammers. It was necessary to replace the internal part with a smaller size, easily done. Claude

The owners handbook supplied with my boat does list all the running rigging dimensions but like others I have found that the standard 12mm (on a 385) generates too much friction and switching to 10mm dyneema makes things much easier.
The FCL sails tend to be supplied with this as standard for halyards but I replaced my jib sheet this year. Also had to replace the cams in the spinlock jammers. From memory the standard cams are for 10-14mm rope but they would not hold my main or jib dyneema halyards. Spinlock offer an alternative cam for 6-10mm lines which I fitted. They also offer ceramic versions but I didn't try these (too expensive). You probably need to remove the entire bank of clutches to replace the cams but this is easily done if you have a large enough Philips screwdriver. Edited by S&J - 07 June 2018 at 07:15 |
