The "booty", or as some say "the pickle dish". Trophy was for 1st place under the official scoring system (PHRF). The watch was for a parallel unofficial scoring system, ORC Club, under which we placed second (totally different division breaks). Edited by Rubato - 22 June 2015 at 19:57 |

Amazing race. This was our 4th time in the event that runs every 2 years. In 2011 we were second in Division and conditions in 2013 were so light that we didn't finish 4 of 10 legs. This year's event presented some of the best and most challenging sailing of my life. 2 boats were dismasted, many shredded numerous sails, and there were some man overboards. On Rubato, we lost 2 spinnaker bags, a winch handle and ripped a batten pocket off the #3 jib. Many legs were 18-24 knots of wind with the most we ever saw was mid 30s. Until this race I've never had to double reef the main but we sailed many legs with a double reef. Down wind speeds were routinely 9-10 with peaks in the 14s. As mentioned earlier, the record was a 17.8 knots while about 25 miles offshore in solid breeze and big waves. Upwind speeds were routinely 7.8 to 8.1 unless we had bigger waves which have a tendency to crash over the deck and slow you down.... I'm still smiling....

Congratulations Steve!
Any action pictures at high speed? Would love to see that roostertail on a Hanse 400. Peter.

We're looking to see if we got any video clips but most of us were pretty busy keeping the boat moving forward in the right direction and not crashing :)
A couple more pics including Rubato leading a CM1200 (Raven) and a Farr 395 (Aduril) to windward in Johnstone Strait. Wind was in the 30s at times... A glimpse of the scenery that we had for pretty much the first week of the race.... |
