Hi,

We have recently bought a Hanse 301 and it came with a 7.5kg Bruce style anchor which does not seem large enough for the job but fits in the bow locker. The boat drifted the first time we used it with 13m of chain and the rest warp.
Are there any anchors that fit in the locker and hold well. We'll mostly be anchoring in mud/sand.

Thanks
Chanser

We also have a 301 with a 7.5kg Bruce.. we also do a lot of anchoring around the Welsh coast and Islands on Scotlands West Coast. We have only been let down by it on 1 occasion, and that was in Loch Scavaig, Southern tip of Skye.. this was due to the seabed being kelp.. so I layed my 10kg folding fisherman anchor..
I carry 3 anchors on board the Bruce, the fishermans and a lightweight fortress.
Interesting you laid out 13mtrs of chain, with a chain scope of 1 in 4 that equates to approx 3.5 mtrs of depth.. I am wondering with tidal rise wether you actually had enough chain out..
I tend to look at a 1 in 5 ratio... if I use only chain or a 1 in 6 if I use chain and rope. I carry 40 mtrs if chain and 40 mtrs of rope ready to deploy with an extra 50 mtrs of rope ready to add on..
So could you perhaps tell us the depth tidal range and ratio you were using..
I would say make sure anchor has bitten, and you lay out enough chain, or chain rope for max depth..

Hi Dave,

The boat came with only a light chain of approx 5 mtrs and the surveyor recommended we go up to 13m of a heavier chain and the rest rope. The conditions were an ebb tide of approx 3-4knots and a s/w wind against tide of 15-20knots. I had thought the boat would sit with the tide but instead of pulling back on the anchor as expected the wind pushed the boat forward hence causing problems with the anchor pulling the wrong way.
As we had only stopped for a short break we lifted anchor and sailed on back home.
The tidal range is roughly 2.5m to 4.5 neaps to springs.
40m of chain though I know quite normal on many boats seems quite heavy for a 301?

40metres of chain, no not a problem. She is not bow heavy at all.
When anchoring in Scotland it is a big plus to have 80 mtrs of chain and rope, to lay out, if it is required.
I also have a "chum" a 20 kg lead weight, home cast) to slide down the line if necessary.
I have stood up to many a good blow and only once deployed my chum.
I would seriously question that you had enough anchor warp out, but I'm only plucking at straws.
May I make a suggestion and see if you can find out how much 40 mtrs of chain weighs then out that amount of weight on the bows of your 301 and see what you think about how she lays in the water.
Going roughly on your figures, if you anchored in 3 mtrs of water, at springs that is approx 7.5 mtrs depth, say 8 mtrs, using 5 times that's 40 mtrs, is that what you put out?
In Scotland, I usually anchor in upto 10 mtrs with often a 4 mtr spring making a total of 14 mtrs x 5 so I lay out minimum 70 mtrs but usually 80 mtrs, and have my other line ready attach if required.
The anchor locker on a 301 with take 40 mtrs of chain and 40 mtrs of rope, plus when I go into a marina I put th anchor in there, as there is nothing worse than boats still got their anchors on their bow roller and with a swell it hangs over th pontoon and in the dark people don't see it..

I've got 20m of chain, 30m of warp, a 6kg delta and a tripping line in my anchor locker and I have no idea how I would get any more of anything in there. With a full water tank and ready to go cruising the boat sits exactly on her marks at the bow with this lot. I can't imagine that 40m of chain would do anything other than get her to trim down at the bow- it is for that exact reason that I don't have all chain in there.

Re. the OP's tidal calculations the range quoted seems quite low but the speed quite high- there's usually a realtionship between those two that is not inverse. Where exactly were you anchoring?

I'm talking actual experience and a full water tank and 40 mtrs of chain does NOT trim down over the normal water line..
I would not really go out with just 13 or even 20 mtrs of chain... but that is personal preference.. it also i never felt at a disadvantage when I used to race..

Very many thanks for the posts on this - I will increase the amount of chain. I have been trying a few anchors with the help of the local chandlery so hopefully we'll come up with a good combination soon.
