Yesterday the steering cable between wheel and rudder of my Hanse 445
broke... corrosion :-( Now in a harbor on a Greek island (steering by
autopilot) we checked how to get the cable out and how to get a
replacement in -- but its not obvious at all how to do it. Thanks for
help!!!

Is it a Jefa system? On my 505 there is an assembly embedded in the deck (I assume prior to being installed on the hull). That assembly includes all the pulleys that route the cables from the steering quadrant up to both of the wheels. If you take some pictures with a cell phone camera pointed down that area it will be clear. I ASSUME, that if you removed the steering wheel and the hub, you could access the mechanism behind. I also ASSUME that the cable is swaged to a chain that runs around a sprocket that is itself attached to the wheel.
Just guessing from what I know of the 505 Jefa system. Good luck. Dave Festina Lente 505

Have a look at ftp://ftp.jefa.com/old_boat_spare_parts/Hanse
There you may download a drawing and you will get part numbers for ordering spare parts. Good luck. Best. |

I posted the drawing for the 505 under manuals and drawings. I had to convert it to a low res .jpg. If you want a better quality .pdf send me a private message with your email and I will ship it off.

Many thanks -- in the meantime we have solved the problem. The six screws are covered by
teak taps, which have to be removed. This way the whole steering unit can be removed. Furthermore it showed to be necessary to also take out the shafts of the steering wheels to take the steering cable+chain from the gearwheel at the shafts and replace it. It obviously makes sense to once a year grease the steering cables to avoid corrosion and also to unscrew the screws of the steering wheel shafts and reinsert them with new silicone -- in our case some where so hard to take out that bigger ones had to be welded onto them to get them out. |

Bang -- the new steering wheel cable installed in May this year just broke
again... It was installed in Greece and I don't know if the quality of
the cable was what it should be. There was no friction before it broke,
all was easy going, and then at 30 knots of wind from stern -- bang.
Do's someone knows about a specification the cable must meet? What could
be the reason, that a 6 month in use steering cable in the same
diameter of the original one brakes (the old one was rusty, the newer
one looked still like new) ? My problem is how to get in Greece a really
working replacement.
Many thanks for any information or specification!!!

Alain,
I think if you read the Jeffa information it states not to grease the steering cable because, apparently, this will cause the cable to slip through the pulleys without the pulleys rotating like they should and the pulleys could then be damaged and ultimately cause a jam or slack in the steering. As you say there are many different type of SS cable material and you need the right one which will handle the constant bending around the pulleys and the damp environment. Rather than replace the cables with ones made of possibly an inferior material I would think the best option would be to get Jeffa to supply replacements. When you reinsert the screws into the steering pedestal I would use "Tef-gel"on the threads to stop corrosion not silicon or Sika. You would of course need to seal the steering boss into the pedestal to stop water entry with silicone or Sika. A friend had a cable on his stbd steering cable break in similar conditions and place and incidentally also in Greece and we replaced the broken cable with Dyneema until he could get the replacement cables from Jeffa sent to a port further along on his planned trip. I would replace both the port side and stbd side cables as the other could also be in a similar condition and could also break soon. The friends port side cable was showing signs of corrosion. The friend contacted Jeffa and they emailed him a drawing to confirm the steering type and also so he could confirm the cable part number from the drawing. I have not dealt with Jeffa but it seems a lot of Forum members have and have found them very helpful. It looked like, from your earlier photos you removed the steering pedestals from the deck but we were able to fit the Dyneema "cable" by just removing the boss. A bit of a fiddle but probably faster. Good luck.

Wayne,
Many thanks for your help! In the meantime I took off the steering unit and found, that the cable obviously went out of one of the rolls and then got squeezed between the roll and the frame, where it then broke. The parts clearly show this. The real problem was, that an all the rolls except on this one a screw makes it impossible for the cable to come off the roll, except on this one, where the part of the frame obviously has been cut to short. On the picture you can see the remaining part of the thread where the screw should be: I don't know who did that lousy job -- Jefa or Hanse -- I will send them some pictures about it. I will exchange the cable (all other sections are in perfect condition) and add a aluminum bracket to prevent the problem to happen any more! Thanks again! |
