Like a lot of other owners we have had problems with our
boat “sailing” whilst at anchor. We tried various options to reduce the swing
but none of these worked to any large degree. Last winter we ordered an “anchor
sail” made in the US. Whilst we were a bit sceptical whether this would work we
thought it was worth a try. After refining the rigging of the AS I can now say
that in 16 kn of wind our swing angle has reduced from about 90 degrees to
about 30 degrees. The swing also seems slower. We have set the AS in up to 25
kn and it has reduced the swing a lot but I did not measure the effect. The AS
is now very easy to deploy and take down – about 2 minutes for each. The other effect the AS has is to reduce the jerking on the
anchor. Instead there is just a more constant pull on the anchor which the manufacturer
suggest is less likely to make your anchor drag and this seems to be true. Another myHanse forum member had a similar AS made in France
which seems according to that member it also reduces the swing significantly. Attached is an image of the sail set in a bay in Greece recently. |
