Hello, perhaps you can help me. The Volvo Penta of my Hanse 575 does not start, and the Volvo Penta technician advised that there should be a chip which should be held to the starting panel. When I took over the boat (used Hanse 575) there was no such chip and it also worked til now without chip. Any advise?

Dear Roland
The Volvo engines do indeed have a chip in the engine management unit, which on our D2-40 is mounted on the port side of the engine, there is also a 15 amp fuse in this unit, initially you could check the fuse otherwise it may well be the unit itself. Ours went with a lightning strike, but it has also failed subsequently. It would seem that they are quite easily knocked out rendering your engine useless. There is more info on this thread, which also shows how to rig an over ride starter button http://www.myhanse.com/im-an-unlucky-captain_topic9851_post81661.html?KW=lightning#81661 Good luck Paul

Roland,
I think your technician is referring to the key dongle which is a black plastic device which is the engine "key". Just like some cars have a a dongle and not a tradition metal key. The VP dongle needs to held next to the starting panel before the engine will start. But in our experience this was only required once when the boat was first handed over to us. This dongle is about 35mm long and 25 mm wide and about 3mm thick and has Volvo Penta printed on one face. I gather if you can't find the boats original dongle a new dongle could be provided by VP if you provide the engine details - model, S/N etc of course for a substantal cost.

We will get a Volvo Penta guy to reset the computer and program a new dongle. Unfortunately they could not make a new dongle just based on the motor details. I anyhow do not understand the idea of the dongle as the motor started always without the dongle. |

The Volvo D2-40 fitted to High Time never had a dongle and a dongle in not mentioned anywhere in the Volvo Users Manual. for this engine. Maybe you have a different engine (D2-75 maybe?).
However, I agree with Paul above that the MDI unit (black box on the port side of the engine) is electronic and can fail, resulting in all engine electrics (start, glow plugs, RPM, alarms and stop function) being inoperable. Also a poor connection between the engine start button in the cockpit and the MDI unit can also result in the engine failing to start. It is possible to jump start the engine, as mentioned in the thread Paul refers to, but it is not easy. Edited by High Time - 07 July 2017 at 16:16 |

Hi there
I never got the key fob with my boat either. But it is just an on/off lock. You shouldnt need it for normal starting, as long as the lock is off. I had to change the engine battery recently to solve a starting problem. But you can jump it off one of the stern thruster battery., if you get stuck. |
