I'm planning a watermaker installation on our 505. I haven't been able to find any information on the location of the factory watermaker, and the factory hasn't provided any details.
I'm considering either the Spectra Cape Horn 330 or the Dessalator Freedom 60 or 100. Has any on installed either of these? Thoughts? I'm thinking about installing the intake next to the speedo guage about 100cm forward of the keel, just off of center line. Anyone have pictures of their installs? Thanks

I think the watermaker normally is located in the forward sail locker A1. If you have the A2 option I do not know.

We have a factory fitted watermaker in our 575. Depending on your choice of WM you may have a low pressure feed pump located normally below the waterline which feeds a higher pressure pump which is normally above waterline or the second type is where you have a LP pump below waterline which feeds a pressure intensifier or multiplier or ETD which is normally above water line and incorporated in teh main Wm unit. With our installation we have a 12 V DC LP feed pump (which is a CAT pump often used as a HP pump but in this case it runs at about 150psi) which is located just in front of the keel slightly offset to the stbd side. It has a filter before the pump in filter out larger debris. This puts it under the floor in the fwd cabin and right next to the depth/speed transducer. This location - next to the transducer - in not ideal because if you want to remove the transducer for cleaning water gushes into the compartment. In our case if the feed pump was fitted in the next bilge compartment on the port side it would be protected from this potential water issue. The idea of having the feed pump situated below the waterline is so it has a "flooded" suction so it can not run dry. The feed pump sends seawater to the WM main unit which is situated in the forepeak. The ETD unit on our WM boosts this feed water pressure from 150 to about 600 psi and this is fed through the RO filter etc. Our unit is a 60 lt/hr model which is just enough. In hindsight a 100lt/hr would be better but has a higher current draw.Our WM draws about 26 amps at 12V. You will need to ensure the pipe sizing and thru hull sizing is correct for the feed pump and the piping to the WM is sized correctly to allow the LP pump to supply both the required pressure and volume of water. It is also important to make sure the power cable sizing is correct for the current draw and length of cable run. If either or both of these things are incorrectly sizes you will have problems.
