Old timers may remember that most cruising boats used to have a thing called a boom crutch. Designs varied greatly but the purpose was to hold the boom steady when furling the main or reefing. They seem to have disappeared around 1970 and are rarely seen today.
On Tangleberry the boom waves around when motoring or when in a rolly anchorage. No matter how hard you pull the mainsheet, there is always movement. Noise is one issue, the other is that is sometimes hits my head when I'm entering or leaving the companionway (I'm on the tall side). I have considered a boom crutch for some time, but finally got around to making one from bits and pieces left over from other projects. Because Tangleberry has a very solid hard doger by Tartarooga, I was able to make it small and mount it on top. The sides are 1" square tubing with plastic end plugs. The black bits are 18mm StarBoard which I had lying around. The pivots are standard plastic bimini fittings. I used these rather than hinges to avoid binding due to the camber of the top. Nyloc nuts were tightened just enough to give some friction so it stays where you put it. It lies flat when not in use. The uprights are padded with foam corner protectors sold for child-proofing. It isn't an elegant design, but it is hardly noticeable anyway. Most Hanse probably don't have a solid dodger but I have seem canvas dodgers with a stromg enough framing to support something similar.
