Hi, we would love some advice from any dog loving sailors. Our new Bosun is 4 months old and is as house trained as any dog that age. We have taken him out on the boat a few times now, but all short trips and having made sure that he has done his 'business' beforehand.
As he gets more used to sailing we would like to take him on longer day trips initially, but what to do about his toilet, cat litter in a tray? As always any advice would be welcome Many thanks Paul

Yogi, our Yorkipoo, is three years old now. We first took him sailing at 14 weeks. He loves the boat. He has never done his business inside, but he sometimes will do it on the foredeck. He can hold it for an amazing time, at least 14 hours, and prefers to go ashore when possible. When we approach an anchorage or marina he gets excited and runs around the mast in circles, and rubs his back on the vang.
As soon as we anchor or tie up the first order of business is to take him for a walk on shore. He only seems to need two walks a day, but more are appreciated. He has recently discovered that he can get in and out of the companionway by himself. His legs are too short to handle the steep steps, so he goes up or down in a single flying leap. Boxers are lovely dogs. One approach is to have a decent size square of artificial turf for the foredeck.
For training you have to be gently persistent until they get the idea. If it has a point to tie a rope on you drag it behind the boat to clean it. Phil O.

Hi Phil, thanks for that, a really good idea we will try that.
Although I did have to read your post twice to realise you meant drag the artificial turf behind the boat, not the dog! Thanks again Paul

I'd try the artificial turf idea too. Remarkably our boat border collie has managed 27 hours without doing her business despite being given the opportunity umpteen times during that duration.

Hi, see below for the Bosun's new "Putting" green! He seems to appreciate and use it, although being artificial it is very slippery when wet, but seems a good fair weather and anchorage solution
All the best Paul
