As a prospective 315 owner focused on pre-2016 models with single wheel, I would appreciate any advice from current owners as to whether the single very large wheel gets in the way? It looks very difficult to go forward from behind the wheel as the gap between the wheel and the port/starboard side of the cockpit looks very narrow to get past and it also looks like you have to go forward to get to the sheet lines/winches to adjust? Certainly, you would have to go forward of the wheel to get to the control line winches and adjust the other control lines. This could be a real problem when sailing single handed, which is the plan. Do you have to hop round on the port or starboard cockpit seat?
Does the big wheel get in the way and is it feasible to fit a smaller wheel? A folding wheel does not really seem like the answer. Any advice and owner's experiences much appreciated. Edited by PJSJones - 06 July 2018 at 22:23 |

Hi Yes! it is an obstacle and going forward your passage is via the cockpit seats. I, like you, sail single handed and it can be frustrating. On the other hand, to see the tell-tales or around the canopy you have to sit on the coamings and you need the big wheel to be able to steer. I find it more irratating when you are working on the boat when mored up on in the winter then I just take it off and store it in the heads. I think you just get used to it and after a while it is just becomes the norm. I have changed the layout of the control lines quite a bit to aviod going forword which I am happy to share with you if you wish. David |

The 341 basically has the same cockpit as the 315. One Sailing Today reviewer actually said it would be nice to have a bigger wheel so that it would be even easier to reach from the cockpit coaming. Like Grumpy, the wheel is actually the right size for helming when going to windward.
My solution to the problem was to fit a Raymarine wheelpilot, so I can just flick a lever, press the autohelm button, check the course and then adjust the sails. If you are sailing singlehanded, I would think an autohelm would come in handy when you want to check the charts or get a brew. If you fit a wheel pilot, make sure the drive is in the bottom sector, otherwise it affects the binnacle compass.

I consider the wheel pilot as mandatory for singlehanded. I have the EVO 100 linked to a Raymarine MDF and a AIS700 classB transceiver with a Samsung tablet to control the whole lot if I need to go below for a while. I can see others as well as be seen and all controlled from the tablet.

I have a 320 with the large wheel and it does get in the way when moving forward. However, the benefit is that you can sit comfortably on the coaming and reach the wheel for good visibility and a view of the tell tails when sailing.
Single handed is not really an issue as there are very few occasions that I need to go forward of the helm. The self tacker means I don't need to go forward to tack and if I'm playing with sail trim I lead the jib sheet to the cockpit winch and I can reach that from the helm. Reefing is done with autopilot help. so actually the odd occasion I do need to go around the wheel I just step up to the seat and down. Dont notice it any more. We normally sail two up and its a lovely comfortable position with the big wheel.

I agree with Mike2145 and grumpydatagit.
On my 2006 H315 I have a normal wheel. Single handing is easy with the help of my EVO100 wheelpilot. I like that the autopilot is fixed in place and not any loose object. The cockpit gets a bit cramped with the wheel and the traveller. I would like to replace the traveller with a fixed main sheet attachment, adjustable also from behind the wheel. The traveller is useless, since the twist is adjusted with the strong spring vang anyway. Mike |
