You are correct , but alternatively
To maintain pressure (for gravity purposes when not in canals etc) I have a piece of insulation tape wrapped around the vent. This means that the pump pressure pushes everything through the outlet and no pressure is lost at the vent. Furthermore no smell exits via the vent to the deck. Then one can leave the seacock open all the time

I had same problem on a 400. The black water tank was broken on its top where connected to the deck evacuation pipe. Once repaired the smell problem has been resolved

Worth investing in this book IMO.

I've tried different products. By far the best is Seasmart: https://www.seasmartmarine.co.uk/index.html.

It is fitted to both toilets on my 455. No more sulphur smells....

Not cheap - but does the job perfectly. (I've no connection with the company other than being a very satisfied customer)
