I've been thinking a lot about how to reduce the cost of sailing so I wrote a blog post about some of my (weird?) ideas about what I'll try to do.

For future potential Hanse 388 owners, I'm putting together a timeline with all my documents, prices etc. I hope this will be useful to someone!

Enjoy and please send feedback in my direction if you have any improvements in mind! (Next step is to build a depreciation model Confused)

I found your costings interesting, although I'm not sure you followed your own advice as I believe you have a very well specified boat with lots of options - or at least several more than me!
The one item that I'm sure no one likes paying is the VAT!

In my own case, the biggest purchase variable was the currency exchange rate.  I elected to purchase my boat in Euros, even though my dealer (Inspiration Marine) was UK based.  In the pre-Brexit period I was very fortunate to buy at a time when the Euro was trading at about 1.4 to £.  If I was to purchase today, I would need to convert an additional £25,000 to pay for the same Euro element (i.e. excluding dealer provided equipment or VAT which were paid in £).

For my first three seasons I over-wintered for approximately 8 months in Greifswald.  I kept the boat outside, but had the mast off and the hull shrink-wrapped at a total cost of around 1,500 euro each winter.  Needless to say, I'm paying much more than that now I am in the UK.

My annual sailing costs (converted to £ at the exchange rate applicable at the time) have varied between £1,330 (2016: 80 days / 1,760NM) and £2,150 (2018: 147 days / 2,590NM).  These costs cover all mooring fees and fuel but not chandlery or maintenance.

I keep my costs low by doing as much work as possible myself, including engine maintenance and antifouling.  I have also benefited from extended periods at anchor in the Swedish and Norwegian archipelagos and was lucky enough to get a prime Solent berth at substantially below marina prices for two months this (2018) summer.

Yes! By "factory specification" I actually meant whatever HanseYachts has put on their price lists including options, but when looking at the depreciation side of it, I'm sure some options keep (part of their) value much better than others. We paid 979 € (VAT included) for a microwave (w/ installation), for instance. Don't know how that is going to hold up :)

VAT is huuuge. I was looking at building a new house (we eventually didn't) a few years back and there's something very peculiar about paying the government a 100 k€ tax to build a 500 k€ house. (I attached a picture showing the different categories with VAT as a separate category.)

Quote In my own case, the biggest purchase variable was the currency exchange rate.

Exchange rates are tricky, especially when there are months (or more) between the payments!

Here's a new price structure picture. Splitting up the "Sailing" pie, the bowthruster and code zero make up over half of it,
