Our 301 has always been as dry as a bone in the salon bilge. This year I had noticed some small amount collecting in there after a few rough weather sails. I have spent quite a few days trying to track this mysterious leak down. Recently I had noticed a growing pool of water behind the forward bulkhead and in front of the mast compression post.
My first suspect was a deck gland bringing the vhf cable through the cabin top and under the headlining. Having removed the lining I found this to be bone dry?
There was no sign of any ingress from the mast base or the fastenings for the deck sheaves for control lines.
I was beginning to think some one was playing tricks on me.

However I used the talcum powder trick to establish this pool of water was coming from under the forward bulkhead not down the back of it

After a very heavy downpour, I found a small pool of water on the top side of the starboard bow hanging wardrobe where the pipes for the water fill and overflow run through.
This then makes its way down the inner hull lining to the inner GF base and is funneled down behind the bulkhead.

It seems the culprit is the sealing of the through deck water filler. It  had hardened and was allowing water through when the decks are awash. I have sealed it by undoing the three mounting screws and have rebedded it with butyl tape. Still waiting for a decent down poor but a good hosing has shown no leak.

Thinking that if the water fill has started leaking lead me to have a look in the stern locker which has always been bone dry. Same problem quite a large amount of water and this had obviously come down the diesel filler tank pipe. This is not surprising as in dock large amounts of rainwater is shed off the boat deck via the toe rail gutter at the stern. The fuel filler stands right in line of flow.

I guess there is a time limit on the effectiveness of the semi flexible sealant that Hanse used.
Its not a big job to reseal these fittings and I only hope this info might help anyone else with a 301 finding water in the cabin or the aft locker.

I think they probably used the same sealant on the pulpit and pushpit mountings. I refitted and resealed our pulpit two years ago. Its worth checking that these mounting points are also still water tight.
