Hi all, time for a “2-year report”

“Sound of Silence” was bought new in Valencia from Marina Estrella in November 2007. It is the 2008 model with epoxy hull, three cabin/two toilet version. I have used it only in cruising mode along the Spanish coast and out to the Columbretes and Balearic Islands. Generally I am happy with the boat, although there have been too many issues. These issues have normally been solved by Marina Estrella although sometimes it takes a long time. However, I am sure that most of them will be fixed at the end and that I will enjoy the boat for many years to come. I have now had her for two years and would like to share my experience with you all.

I am especially happy with:
Sailing capabilities
Steering wheel, light and neutral on the helm
Layout of accommodation and a lot of space everywhere
Two toilets
Self tacking jib and sheet lines led to steering position because of mainly shorthanded sailing
Electric sailwinch because of heavy main sail
Northstar chartplotter with AIS integrated

I am unhappy with:
Not good enough finish and a lot of problems with equipment, see below under “Problems”
Slams quite a lot when motoring into sea
Layout of cockpit in forward part (which is “rounded” which makes it uncomfortable to sit with the back to the bow when for example reading a book)
Bad design of drain for shower
Bad location of anchor winch
Friction in lines + poor quality lines
Main sail already damaged because of friction against aft swept spreaders
Anchor easily touches bow when lowering/hoisting

Problems I have had:
Anchor hatch very soft (changed by dealer under warranty)
Bathing platform not aligned  (fixed by dealer)
Cracks on both side of bathing platform (changed by dealer)
Some of the wooden parts of the ceiling fell down (fixed by me)
Main windows came loose twice (currently being fixed (again!) by dealer under warranty)
GPS stopped working several times (Installed locally in Valencia, cable changed twice under warranty, now working fine)
Simrad autopilot broken down twice, unit changed once and currently sent for repair (covered by warranty)
Temperature/speed sensor breakdown (promised changed under warranty)
2x bubbles in gelcoat (fixed by dealer under warranty)
Anchor winch stopped working (changed by dealer)
Wrong position of anchor winch, chain builds up underneath (not fixed)
Shower drain in main bathroom is at the highest point (not fixed)
Sinks in both bathrooms rusty (promised changed by dealer under warranty).
Fan for extraction of air from engine space makes a lot of sound (dismounted from the aft bulkhead by myself, this helped). Later it broke down completely (promised new by dealer under warranty)
Fridge stopped working (fixed by dealer under warranty)
“Plastic part” came off the electric winch (fixed by dealer under warranty)
Roof falling down stb side (promised fixed by dealer, but not fixed yet)
Poor quality/finish several places (will not be fixed)

Some upgrades/extras:
Simrad and Northstar electronics installed locally in Valencia including extra Data instrument at charttable, extra Data in cockpit, VHF with connection and speaker both in cockpit and at chart table, Northstar 8,4” chartplotter with AIS integrated and radar
Radarmast stb side aft with gimbaled radar mount and antennas
Custom stainless steel instrument mount above cockpit hatch with 3x Simrad instruments and stainless steel at steering wheel lengthened to make space for Northstar chartplotter. I am very happy with this setup!
Gennaker equipment
Extra big wheel
Extra spinlock mounted stb side for securing line from jib roller furler
Boom top lift lead to cockpit stb side
Curtains made in main cabin
3x mast steps
Sun awn
IKEA teak garden table used as cockpit table (fits perfect, is solid and 6 can eat in comfort)
Handhold in cabin (at shower bulkhead)
Ronstan main system
Electric winch for main halyard
Delta 16kg and Rocna 25 kg anchors
Deck light, radar reflector etc
2x new Jabsco bilge/shower pumps for the shower drains (to avoid cleaning filters!)
On/off switch on steering pedestal for the engine room vent
2x extra service batteries installed on stb side
Galley sink drain hoses re-connected for better drains
Zodiac dinghy with 4 HP outboard, main sheet changed position so zodiac fits on roof top on top of liferaft
Ventilation fan in each cabin

Future upgrades?
I regret I didn’t tick the bowthruster option and might go for this expensive upgrade at some stage. This is mainly due to the way of mooring in the Med with stern to the quay. It would be beneficial to be able to keep the bow in position until the bow is moored with the mooring lines attached to the quay.
Bow spread with space for both anchors, + extra upgraded winch for new Rocna anchor. I would appreciate if anyone have experiences with installing a bow spread like this, aesthetics etc…
Insulate engine room better (currently too noisy in my opinion)
Bimini aft in cockpit with space for solar panels on top
Change to better lines where needed
