Hello everybody,
We just had the happy news that our new Hanse 400 arrived in Workum (Netherlands) and, ofcourse, we are very exited about it... But we need some advise. We have to sail to Bruinisse the comming weeks wich is a 30 hours trip mainly down the northsea coast. Our plan was to do this on a weekend (lack of time) in one trip (including the night from saturday on sunday). However, we did get the advise not to do this because it is a new boat and a lot of things might go wrong in the first sailing hours/days. What are your experiences about this? Did a lot of people had problems during their maiden trip with a new Hanse ? Thanks in advance for your advise. Tom NAUGHTYC |

congratulations to your new boat.
1. I would do one ore two test trips on the ijsselmeer at first. There are always some minor problems, may be with the electronics the autopilot or something else. brouse this forum, you will find a lot tips for the first trip.
2. Leave your boat after these intinial trips for some days in Workum. So the team there is able to solve the problems. If you do not have any problems that would be great.
3. I would not suggest to do a night trip as the first trip, even if you are a experienced sailor. Why not sailing at first to Amsterdem, Ijmuiden in two short daytrips. Leave the boat there for a week and the other part will be done on the next weekend if the weather is perfect. This is much more relaxed. And you can wait for the correct weather window.
You may also think about the staande mast route if the north sea is to rough.

Thanks for your advise Blake. We will certainly consider to sail via Amsterdam - Ijmuiden and the rest of the trip in another weekend.

Hi Tom,
I collected my 400 last season from Workum. In fact we did some sailing for a weekend and left the boat At WestYachting for a week. That allowed tthem to fix the majority of points found during delivery. After that we took a small holiday to sail down and get to know the boat. No matter how experienced you are, I would also advice against a 30 hour continuous trip down to Bruinisse with a ship new, not well tested and unknown. For example our GPS antenna tuned out to be wrongly setup, which we found out after a few hours. Further we have no complaints and are still very very happy with our choice for the Hanse 400!! You will experience many good sailing and relaxing! BTW in case you decide to sail via Stellendam Berrisz in the harbour can be recommended for Dinner. Ratatouille is at E7. |

Hi Tom, if you dont want to be on the Northsea in february, check the Staande Mastroute.
http://rijkswaterstaat.nl/water/feiten_en_cijfers/staandemastroute/index.aspx It will bring you on three days to bruinisse. Have a nice trip, i will follow you on one month later on our Hanse 400 maiden trip to Den Osse. Edited by Albatros de - 24 January 2010 at 14:20 |

Hi,
Congrats on your new boat. I picked up mine in Workum too. O my website I wrote the story. Uisge Beatha Check under 'Archief'. Trip from Workum to Amsterdam If I where you, I would take the Roompot lock instead of Stellendam. Why, opening times of the Haringvlietbrug, during the winter this one does not open very frequently, especially during the weekend. What is you mast height? If you are over 20meter you can only enter the Roompot at low tide. 30hours from Workum to Bruinisse sounds very optimistic to me. Gven the suggested Staande Mast Route, check up front if all bridges are working at the moment you need the. The railway bridge in Gouda only opens twice a day. My suggestion is, if the forecast is ok (taking your experience into account as well), to take the North Sea route. 1. Workum Amsterdam here decide a) go through the North Sea channel (4hours) or take the Staande Mast Route 2. From IJmuiden to Scheveningen, in case of bad weather approaching, a good harbor tospend the night (or twho) 3. Scheveningen - Roompot 4. Roompot - Bruinisse The route 3 and 4 gives you less bridges and locks than the route via Stellendam. If I can be of any help, please let me know. Gregor |

Hello everybody,
Thanks for your replies, it helps a lot. We decided this weekend to stay the first weekend around Workum to check the boat properaly and do a lot of testing. We will use the weekends there-after to get the boat to Bruinisse. Wich route we choose will depend on the weather. Our preference is the North-Sea route. Thanks again for the good advise. We will give an update on how it went beginning of March... Cheers! Tom |
