Hi,
I was wondering how much the mast should tilt backwards (mast rake) on the Hanse 311/12/15 boats. Some of my more experienced sailing friends says that the mast on my boat has to little rake (not enough tilted backwards). More mast rake can only be done by increasing the fore stay length. This is not easily done on my boat. Have anyone ever measured the mast rake on their boats ?

Without specifically knowing you boat - I have 312, 2004 model with Sparcraft rig and in my case mast has maybe 5-8 cm pre-bent when set up correctly. When I got the boat someone told me the same - rake is not enough and I had a professional mast specialist to have a look. His verdict was that mast is ok when rake is around mentioned.
I have tested with more rake but then the problem is when beating mast starts to 'pump' and that is not something you want to see. This is because especially the lower shrouds are fairly loose.
So when correctly set mast has very little rake. What I have done I have increased the ratio of backstay tensioner and when needed I can increase the tension very efficiently and reduce power on the main. I was told that Sparcraft rig is very robust so no problem there. Also my stardard North mainsail is cut accordingly so no problem there either.
I hope this helps. I have learned that it is important to know the boat and then take advise from fellow sailors ...

we have just finished - prematurely a bareboat charter out of Yacht Haven Phuket of a 315. Our skipper with over 30 years of sailing and owning 2 yachts in europe- decided to cut short a 10 day trip because of a water pump defect- BUT most importantly that the stopper on the top of the mast was not functioning so considered it dangerous to continue- we had two days of motoring instead of sailing. On reading the problems of other HANSE owners - I feel we had a lucky escape -particurly with the addition of sudden storms which come out of the blue in this region- and indeed we exeprienced one but luckily had just anchored- HANSE SHOULD SERIOULSY LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM -AS SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT NOT BE SO LUCKY!
