On 6/25, Legacy competed in the 72nd run of the Queens Cup sponsored by the South Shore YC of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US. The race begins outside of Milwaukee on the west shore of Lake Michigan and ends, 66.6 miles away outside of Grand Haven, Michigan, on the east shore. Last year, Legacy placed 4th in her division. This year she placed 2nd (17 in Division) and 14th overall (out of 195 boats competing). Not bad for a cruiser flying cruising sails (factory main and locally made 135 North genoa).
The race is overnight beginning at about 6 pm CDT. Because the winds held so steady all night, all boats ran the rhumb line on a reach. Imagine, almost 70 miles of sailing surrounded by nearly 200 boats! Everything from rocket sportboats (Melges 33, Mumm 36, etc) to luxury cruisers (46 Arcona, several Najads) to production boats (Hunters, Catalinas..... but only 1 Hanse!) to the big boys DuBois, NM, J-145, TP-52). It was fabulous night. |
