Improve battery charging? I bought a 342 with 1 x 80 + 1 x 110 Ah, now have I added a second 110 Ah battery (Varta art no 959 002 000 3100). I checked the setup of the Sterling-Power charger (PRO-Digital) and realized that it was for "GEL, EXIDE SPEC., LED GREEN". The standard batteries from Varta should be of the type called SEMI-TRACTION, has anyone digged into the settings of the Sterling Power charger? I am thinking about to change to battery type setup "NON SEALED, LEAD ACID OR TRACTION, LED YELLOW" http://www.varta-automotive.com http://www.sterling-power.com/

The Stirling has 3 settings: Flooded (wet) cell [yellow LED], Gel [green LED]and finally Advanced Glass Mat (AGM) [Red LED]. What they do is decrease the maximum charging voltage to suit the battery type: wet>gel>AGM. Using it on gel setting with wet cell batteries will not damage them, just reduce the charging rate (and reduce the frequency at which you have to top up the batteries). Check that your existing batteries are not Gel or AGM and you can switch the Stirling to the normal/wet cell settings [yellow LED]. There is a lot of marketing speak and confusion in the naming of batteries. Marine/leisure/semi traction/ no(or low) maintenance are all wet cell, just have differing thickness of the plates. Gel and AGM will be labelled as such, occasionally called sealed or valve regulated. Hope that helps Edited by Wazzo - 03 July 2006 at 10:06 |

Paul, I don't have problem to read the manual from Stirling-Power :-)) I am surpriced that I seem to be the first Hanse owner that have detected a mismatch between delivered batteries and factory settings of the battery charger for shore power. I don't have any problem to improve our lovely sailing yacht, and this forum is a tool for us all to share experiences. Before I change the setting I would like to hear from some other that have done it before which doesn't seem to be likely do I realise now. My plan is to install a Battery Brain II device at the same time as I am connecting all 3 batteries in a common battery bank.

Stirling Power has a good electronic "alternator regulator" that will charge the engine battery and a bank of house batteries, each to their correct voltages. You can choose between "a bit of work to fit" Alternator to |

You need to be sure the batteries aren't sealed before you up the charging voltage. On the 370 I think we have sealed batteries. I'll check this point when out there next week. If not certain don't change the switch. As regards charging the batteries from the alternator the Hanse 370 already has a voltage sensitive relay arrangement. This (I was told) charges the engine battery and then the domestic. The instructions are in German so I'm having trouble checking this. Has anyone fathomed out exactly what it does. Popeye - are you taking this off when you fit the Stirling charger. Also, do you need to dismantle the Yanmar alternator to get to the field when fitting the same? |

I talked to Varta in Sweden, they do not sell the battery we have but similar (960 002 is sold in Sweden). Semi-traction batteries do use gel technology so the settings seem to be right on the Stirling charger. That's excellen to know because I am going to add Solar cell system with a controll unit that needs to charge with the right Voltage.
