I agree with that. I will try it next time.

I don't understand what you mean. Is this when your pilot is sailing to wind angle? I have not done that very much as I tend to sail to a course where possible.

On one hand this is a interesting discussion.

But to be honest:

My main instrument to fnd the right speed close hauled is my "feeling" and i use ALWAYS the telltales.
Nothing is better than these cheep telltales (If at the right position)

The wind i feel with my nose!
My feeling for the right angle/wind direction and the actual windspeed und the right reef is always better than any instrument on my boat! Maybe this comes from my sailing career. I have been sailing regattas since about early 80īs last century until late 90īs ;-). In my regatta times i regulary listed any parameter.
No instrument can feel the dependency between wind, sea state, comfort, sail choice, reef choice  etc.

The instruments i only use to confirm my feeling!

I completely agree with you Peter. When your background is racing dinghies and smaller keel boats, you can develop a good nose - who needs instruments?

But when you progress or start on cruisers, your crew can feel at ease using instruments while you develop a nose for a good whiskey or wine.

Charles, I won't argue about the last commentWink.

I personally think especially when newcomers are starting on cruisers it is almost mandatory to switch off instruments and show them the effects of minor changes based on 'nose' and telltales.
My experience is always that 'feeling' the changes is a very positive experience for them and also enables them to reproduce these positive effects again in the future.

Instruments can be used later for finetuning, when the 'feeling' is established and people
understand effects of changes to sail settings, course, wind angles etc.

Sorry Charles , I failed to explain, I always sail autopilot to wind angle.
Basicly set course with wind angle, tweek sails and let her go. As wind moves we re-adjust wind angle on autopilot and re tweak sails.
Most of my sailing is long distance off shore and the last thing we need is a wind shift and a crash gybe, when on wind the autopilot bleeps to let us now when we are 20 degrees off course ; but crew have normaly noticed that the COG has changed so we are on the case.
If under power or messing on a river then a course is set.
Is it possable that the next generation will develop a nose for faulty electronics, mine is stuck in the wine malt mode , however if sailing in the Hebradise at sunset with a malt then my nose has the ability to find wind and fermented hops; if only I could persuade Nicole Kidman to come and cook on board.

When sailing the fastest boats Hanse 430e, it is difficult if not impossible to sail with the nose, it is normally so high speed so that you can feel that the wind is always from the front.
You have to keep track of the True Wind constantly otherwise the risk is that you are sailing too low.

Hey Idelfix Too.
I understand your special problem idelfix!! Looking at your avatar i see the problem. Your beard disturbs the air on your nose! This way you cannot feel the wind!LOL

Maybe you need a little upgrade on your beard or your nose  and than you can feel it for sure!ClownWacko

BTW there is a new simrad Instrument, special invention for you idelfix!

it is called the "personal-NOSE-Instrument"
Now you can feel the vibrations on the instrument nose!

Here is the first picture!
