I have one start battery and three group 31 house bateries, one of which is isolated for the winch/windlass. I am tempted to tie this third (winch) battery to my house bank. Has anyone done this?

Hello Victor,
Yes - see attached photo. Additionally I am able to switch the service batteries to back up the engine start battery.

Ian, thanks for the reply. on your top battery I see you have a black and a red wire from the the battery positive terminal going into the elctrical compartment. Where do these two go? I only have one wire in that same position.

A slight variation for you for the future maybe.
I had the same thought given that many electric winch/windlass operations happen with engine running. However, I was concerned that the service bank battery pair would have had a harder life than the winch battery. So joining them would give useful extra capacity but tend to shorten the life of the winch battery given the service pair degradation. As it happened, Grey Goose's 2 service batteries showed signs of being near end-of-life, however the winch battery and the smaller engine battery were still healthy. So I bought 3 x 130Ah (Trojans) replacements for the service bank, the winch battery became a larger engine battery (110Ah versus the original 88Ah) and the original engine battery became a spare to drive an electric outboard when required. The winch feed is connected to the now expanded engine battery. By going this route the service bank is a balanced set, and the engine battery gets a little extra capacity to service winch needs. Only downside was the need for some minor carpentry to raise the navigation seat enough to clear the larger batteries. Its tough to find batteries as with the low profile of the original Varta's so I'd likely have had to do that anyway. I did also improve the charging side of the equation to match the upgraded service bank (Advanced Alt regulator, thicker cables & zero loss splitter instead of the VSR) but that's another story. Mark

On my 370 (2007) I replaced the original batteries for 2x Matervolt AGM 160Ah. They are also too high however I just milled about 1cm from the bottom side of the wooden top lid and that was enough. Since I installed a smaller AGM starter battery (about 35Ah) which is by far enough there is still place for a third 160Ah AGM Battery but I decided that 320Ah is fine.

Good Morning Victor,
The black cable is a feed to an electric winch (aft starboard on my 370).
The black battery in my photo is a 110 AH Platinum Leisure Battery (6110L) which is a sealed deep cycle battery that neatly replaces the original Varta battery. It is actually about 10mm shorter than the Varta.

Ian
