Hello all,

Not long now until we take delivery of our 385. Excited doesn't even start to cover it!
I was wondering if other owners out there have found any extra storage areas over time?

We've chartered the 385 a few times and there seemed to be quite a few areas where I couldn't work out what the space was being used for. A few that come to mind are:

1. Looking aft at the gas bottle storage area. What's to the right of that under the seat? Is it just empty space? Any way to get to there?

2. Between the helms. There's a large cover there in the centre (I'm guessing the steering is there?) Any extra space in there though? I know some yachts have quite a bit of dead space there that can be used.

3. There's a small hatch at the back of the aft cabins. Does anyone use this space for storage?

4. The bilge seems quite shallow, there's the area for wine, is there any other storage space to be found under the floors?

5. Anywhere else you've found?

As we're going to be living on board for quite a while every storage area is going to help. Any feedback or ideas would be most welcomed.

All the best,
Simon

Hi. The space behind the aft cabin is largely empty but you do have the eberspacher on starboard. The space is pretty hard to get to.

There's quite a lot of unused space under the aft port berth even allowing for the calorifier which itself is as far forward under the berth as possible. It is a touch awkward to access but you could do a bit of jiggery pokery and make it easier if you are prepared to divide up the cushions and boards beneath.

Enjoy your new boat. We have just got ours in October and we too are looking forward to the forthcoming season.

The best storage area i have found is in the garage at my home!Embarrassed

Every bit you do not carry, makes your boat a faster, better and more comfortable sailing vessel!
But if you have to carry something, make sure it is stored  as close to the middle as possible of the boat and not to the ends!

Think twice about everything you carry on board. You should remember, everything what gets on board will take a long long time to stay on board!

I remember my last boat when it was sold. On the day of take over of the new owner I found many many things i did not even remember anymore! And this was only a 7 metre boat!LOL

Good points about making sure everything is needed. We're going to triple check that for sure.

Hi Simon, having just signed up for the 6 months cruise, we will have the same problem. We haven't needed any space yet as we don't spend long enough on the boat.

The first think I intend to do is fit some more retaining devices in the big locker. In cruising mode we will have to stow the Dinghy and outboard (as I don't like them on the deck especially in bad weather), swim ladder and boat hooks (although I will keep one on the deck) spare lines and all my flying sails (3) plus the spare lifejackets in there. I will try and keep my tools and spares accessible under the saloon seats.

By the way, I put a big fire extinguisher on the stern side of the shelves in the big locker, so I can reach it from the cockpit by opening the locker lid. I think this is sensible in case of fire in the galley or engine. My grab bag, Epirb, rig cutters and flares all live in the starboard locker too, on the shelf between the big space and the coaming so that it is all ready in a crisis, and we have a knife permanently mounted by the port wheel ready to cut the painter on the life raft.

We filled the space in front of the water tank with a bow thruster, and some of the space under the berth in the rear cabin with the water heater, but from memory there is more space there that can be used. After that its under the seats in the saloon, I use the port one as my bosun's locker, but the starboard one is currently empty (although harder to get at, and will take the heavy but used infrequently stuff in my plan.

One thing I am struggling with is where to put my water. I like the idea of the 5 gallon bottles, but cant figure out where to mount one. Since we don't want to rely on the one water tank for everything, this is my next priority. I have thought of water makers, but since we will not be crossing oceans (like you will do) we have decided against at this stage (apart from a small handheld emergency one)

Mark,

What 6 month cruise have you signed up on? Is this a organised rally type cruise or are you taking 6 months off and cruising in your area or the Med? From all the sailing and racing you do it sort of sounds like you are already on holidays.

Hi Wayne,

Its an organized rally starting in Turkey and going into the red sea for the winter. Maximum 20 boats, not sure how many are signed up yet last I heard was 11, and of course we are watching the developments in Egypt with interest. We will move the yacht in August, and prepare her as best we can, having never lived aboard before I'm sure we will forget something which is why we wanted to go with other boats for our first 6 months. I stopped work about 3 weeks ago, so now we have added Tuesday pursuit races to the weeks events. We work on the basis that there's a lot of capital tied up in a boat, so not sure why we wouldn't want the maximum return of fun and experience, which is why we use her so much.

Mark & Catherine,

More power to you. We only have 106 days to go (but who's counting) before we retire and pick up our boat. I and I guess a lot of the forum will be keen to hear how your rally goes. We hope to be at the eastern end of the Med by 2016 and hopefully the current issues are sorted in Egypt etc by then. Where does the rally start and end? Who is organising the rally and their website?

Go to the cruisers forum website and search for Red Sea rally or rally to Egypt winter 2014-2015, you can follow everything from there. Chap who is behind it is Albert Cook, who has been before.

There is a Facebook page called Red Sea sailing safari too.

We start and end in Turkey
