Was at the london boat show on Saturday & made the comment to Peter Thomas ( Inspiration Marine)that one could not fit a decent mainsheet track on a 345. He was adamant that on this model it is not necessary. I just wondered ---Is that sales talk or have owners not missed the presence of a track?

I do not have any mainsail track... but plan to fit one.
The Standard set up is fine in light wind and/or if you have competent crew.
With all the lines on coachroof It is impossible to play with mainsheet & vang when shorthanded unless you leave the wheel.  It might be better on new Hanses since lines run to the wheels but it is not so easy to realase mainsheet from the clutch.
As I'm sailing very shorthanded I have already set mainsheet on a cockpit floor pad eye.  It's better but still not very efficient.
I'm planning to set a short but removable traveller in cockpit.  Works in progress...

the need for a mainsail track on a 345 depends on what you want to do with that boat. the boat is designed to be easy to sail and to have a free cockpit; this obviously come with some compromise on the tweaks you can make.
anyway your statement is inaccurate; you can always put a mainsail track on a 345, but you have the get rid of the table and to redesign how the lines are routed. if you are prepared to do it, you can do it, but this is not what this boat was designed for.
otherwise there are a lot of other boats that can offer your mainsail track solution...

I looked into a track on the coachroof on the 385, but having sailed for a year and a half i wont do it.

The boat sails well without one, and I'm assuming the 345 will as well.

In order to stop the leach hooking to windward when close hauled (tightening the sheet pulls the boom down) I fitted a simple bridle to the mainsheet blocks.

Of course its not as good as having a track, but its simple and safe, and doesn't worry me in the slightest.

Relating to this older topic, here are some pictures of our experiment with a cheaper version of a traveller utilising the mainsheet bridle approach, but making it adjustable so that the centre of the boom can be brought to the high side.

Seemed to work well as a test. Could get the boom beyond the centre line (not generally a good idea, I know). I think we will revert to a fixed bridle in the style of others as this ensures the mainsheet can be brought to very close to the centre as required, and is simpler and sufficient. Maybe keep this bridle in a locker for light wind, upwind races.
