Patina (/ˈpætɨnə/ or /pəˈtiːnə/) is a thin layer that variously forms on the surface of stone; on copper, bronze and similar metals (tarnish produced by oxidation or other chemical processes);[1] on wooden furniture (sheen produced by age, wear, and polishing); or any such acquired change of a surface through age and exposure. Patinas can provide a protective covering to materials that would otherwise be damaged by corrosion or weathering. They may also be aesthetically appealing. As Gertha approaches her 9th year, I think she is starting to develop a patina. I hate to copy and paste from a higher source however it appears appropriate. When I look around the local marina some boats have the look of experience, odd blocks and cords placed to help the old girl along. Other boats look as if the ropes are the same as the day she was delivered. Can a boat develop a Patina ? Rioja 2006 Simon |

Yes it can for sure!
Thats why i ordered a teakdeck! I wanted a GREY teakdeck! I love my grey teakdeck - thats patina. And this patina came fast! Even gelcoat can develop a patina, but only if it is not dirt. Its like an old painted wooden board. At some point the colour changes and varies to a "patina" look. Old ropes show patina if they show that they have done a lot and hard work. To me, its not patina if they just get old and look unused and forgotten. Even the design of our 370 develops a "patina". It seems the 370 is getting timeless We all put on a little patina, on our boats and ourselves? As long as we maintain it, it's patina. At some point patina can underline the character of a boat. If we do not maintain, then it's just an aging state Edited by Peter-Blake - 06 March 2015 at 07:54 |

Deep, very nice !
It's true, while the smell of a new boat can be tantalizing (more with Polyester than with Epoxy) like the smell of the new leather seats in your Audi (), after many years something replaces it (assuming it's not the smell of spilled diesel or the leaking heads) that is very comforting. I love to step on board, if I haven't been there for a while, it's like coming home. Gertha now renamed to 'Rioja 2006' ?

This is great, so I don't need to worry about Ubulukutu ageing, she can age gracefully, a bit like me and my grey hair!

You are all making me homesick for Legacy which is sitting on the hard, in the snow an Michigan while I am warm and cozy in Florida. The hot tub, swimming pool, fishing and outdoor tennis don't make up for the longing to once again be aboard, getting her ready for the season, her launch and that first sail.
Oh well.....Think I'll have another glass of wine. |
