Hi

I have a number of our 430 port lights shedding their black powder coating finish. Has any one else had this problem and if so how have you resolved it?

Hi Ken,

Yes this is a very common problem with Lewmar hatches on Hanses, why they used a powder coat instead of straight anodising i don't know but this forum is full of complaints particularly for boats in 2006-2011 era.

My own 2010 400 had the same problem and i complained to both Hanse agent and Lewmar agents directly, after much posturing and the odd legal threat they provided me with a full set of hatches for my boat as replacement and acknowledged Lewmar had issues with powder coating on a significant number of hatches.

My advise, point this out to your dealer and local Lewmar agents and push for replacements.

There is little you can do with the existing hatches, as aluminium is not anodised it pits and corrodes under the powder coat where the moisture gets in and looks awful, cost of making good is more than swapping them out.

Frustrating thing is that Lewmar still makes these hatches with powder coated finish after all of the issues they have had, they should just go natural anodised and they would last forever.
