I plan to leave my boat for a few days in June - possibly between 9 - 14 June - in Holland. I'll be visiting family in Den Haag/The Hague and am looking for a secure marina. At present I don't have rubbing strakes on the boat (a Hanse 455, beam 4.38m) and if possible I would prefer not to have to use a "box" mooring.
Is anyone able to recommend a suitable marina? Many thanks Richard Edited by Richard M - 14 February 2016 at 14:02 |

Scheveningen Yacht club, in the high season the will probebly have a box for you if you will reserve it in advance.

Taking a 45 ft to the Netherlands , you are going to have to accept the "box" idea.
Scheveningen is the place to be for the Hague; but no finger pontoons there. The next port north has good facilities; but again I think no fingers. South is probably what we call Flushing the old town marina or harbour is fun but again posts, the other marina is through a lock , very secure and I cannot remember the configuration; but 45 foot will be big. Maybe stop at Shotley and take the Harwich ferry to where you want to go. Simon |

Thanks Peter, Marcel & Simon. I have decided that my fear of posts is (probably) irrational and am looking to see if I can have rubbing strakes fitted to BrightStar. I have been the Flushing many years ago. Scheveningen allegedly doesn't take bookings - but I'll ask my family to enquire. I'm guessing that the trick with the marina is to arrive early in the day.

Actually, they have finger pontoons in the personal boxes in Scheveningen. and as Scheveningen is a harbour for north going as well as south going ships (most ships sail with te tide that goes along the coast) one of the two fleets will arrive early and the other late. Most of these ships will be parked in the visitor box were you will moore alongside, rows will grow up to four boats.
But as you want to stay a bit longer you better ask for a personal box or to be allowed to pass the visitor box and take the second entrance to the right. It is more quiet on that side. Maybe a surprise but there are many 45 footers or even bigger sailing in Holland. I do not think You will have e real problem finding spots to park your boat.

Hello Bandy
Thanks for this. Sorry I haven't acknowledged earlier - this is most helpful. When do I ask for a visitor box? I know Scheveningen don't take bookings. Is this something that I will be able to do on arrival - which may be late - possibly after 2000 hrs? Would it be acceptable just to go straight to the second entrance and then talk to the marina office in the morning if the office is closed when we arrive? I'm reassured by your comments on the availability of parking spaces! Kind regards Richard

In the high season the harbourmaster might be still there at 20.00. And maybe he is even awaiting you in his dinghy (which he does every day) to direct you to a suitable place. If not it is perfectly acceptable to take the second entrance and find yourself a suitable place. I have done that more than once myself.
If you look at the harbour in google maps (satellite view) you can see it is rather big, if it is really full at the yacht harbour side there is also a possibility to go to the left side entering the last bassin and even there you will find mooring opportunities (although these are not owned by the Yacht harbour). As there are a lot of movements every day in the high season (as told before Scheveningen is a transit harbour for south- and north going sailing boats) I think there is a good chance you will find a proper place to leave your boat for a few days the day following your arrival.
