Hi,
Does anybody know if Hanse does any factory installed lightning protection? I did not find on my 385 any big dia cable connections to the keel and am wondering if I should install something. Did anybody install any custom lighting protection? Did anybody had any lightning stroke yet? Any comments welcome. Best Ralph |

As I understand lightning is frightning but not deadly. It has happened some boat has been struck by lightening, but none dead as I understand.
If the lightning strikes it will follow one of the stands down to sea. I keep myself mostly in the center of the boat and not touch any wires. I would not add an extra cable. Probably more damage than good with galvanic corrosion.

This article may be of interest and has been published this month. I read the article in the mag and that had the "part 2" bit about protection. I'm not at home at the moment, but IIRC some of the issues with protection were around the path to ground and what happens if the lightening jumps off intended path.http://www.sailingtoday.co.uk/safety/what-happens-when-a-yacht-is-struck-by-lightning/

I have met people who have had problems with lightning ,
Normal end is blown electronics , but no structural problems. Have herd of sea cocks blown out of a boat; but not first hand. My thought is let the Lightning run down the outside of boat , giving a path to keel may increase chance of damage and also increase the chance of a strike as you will be a better conductor. If lightning is about , put all portable kit in the cooker, stay inside all the wire that runs round boat and pray. And if you are at Anchor or in a marina park near someone bigger, so he gets it first! |

I have no experience with lightning but it is very similar to static electricity. With over 35 years in designing electronics the best approach is don't get it inside the product. Once inside it jumps everywhere. Early in my career we tried the "give it a good solid path to ground" approach and it doesn't work. The problem is that static/lightning is such a high charge that a single wire can not discharge it quick enough so even though you put a large wire in place to the keel, it will travel many other directions/paths as well... Bottom line, I agree with the advice above.
