Hi all
We are planning to take our H505, S/Y NordVest, from our homeport in Bergen (Norway) to St Petersburg in Russia and take the White Sea Canal (Belomarkanal) to the Russian-Norwegian border and then southwards along the Norwegian coast back to Bergen. We are planning to do this voyage over two years with a winter stay for the boat in the far north of Norway. Have any of you done this before, or do you have any information or input? Grateful for any tips or input. Best regards from Bjarne

Have sailed to St. Petersberg, the whole process for taking a boat into Russian waters is complex; an agent is needed. Everyone uses Vladimer, he works with his daughter , he is the only point of contact that I know of, would recommend him,
There is a requirement to have a Russian speaking person on board when in transit on the canal, this so you can talk to locks. I would love to do the trip, would you be interested in sailing in company for the Russian part ? Simon |

Hi Simon
Sure we can sail together for the Russian part. Based on your footer in your posting, I assume you have logged quite a few miles before this trip? Our overall plan is to take the boat to the St. Petersburg area stepwise during the spring and then return back home by plane and wait for the summer holiday. We will return to the boat early July as this is the start of the holiday season in Norway. The departure from St. Petersburg ca be shifted a week in either direction, but I´m afraid that this is our window of flexibility. We anticipate the duration to Hammerfest (my place of birth in Norway) will take four to five weeks. Hopefully this will give us sufficient time to experience Russia. Do you have any restrictions in your sailing plan, or are you able to fit in with ours? Regarding formalities we have also heard about Vladimir. I guess he have been involved most of the non Russian voyages in this area. I also learned about a Swedish forum were I found lots of useful information. I you understand the language, there might be some valuable information for you as well. Any other sailors out there that will join us? Bjarne

I can be very flexible on times.
The main problem will be Russia. Strongly recommend you leave boat in Helsinki, then make whole Russia trip one leg. Sugest that allow 2 months to sail/moter Russia this being July and August. Taking a boat to Russia is not for the faint hearted; there will be a lot of hassle, back handers, smiles and more hassle. |

Good morning Simon
You are absolutely right regarding leaving the boat in St. Petersburg, this is not for my stomach either. The plan is to leave the boat in Helsinki, but will Tallinn be an alternative? I´m planning to contact Vladimir shortly to establish contact and start the formalities. As I understand this can (or will) take som time. In my last post I referred to a Swedish forum, but I forgot to include the link. Following you will find a link to a mail correspondence between the the Swedish armada and Vladimir winter 2014. If you understand the Scandinavian languages you will find valuable info. Bjarne |

Bjarne,
I regret I speak no Swedish, however I have a good friend who is Swedish and a Dane who is clever at translating computer script. However some of the entries are in english so I can understand what is happening. Talinn is another option; much depends on your proposed route to Russia and what experience you have of the Baltic. I would chose Helsinki as facilities there are good; there is a chance you may need spares or repairs before setting off into an area with no backup, Tallin is a pretty City ;but facilities for boat work are limited and with Finland so close most people will be using resources there. The biggest problem I can see is finding a Russian speaking translator to crew for the inland waters, who will also need to understand a boat. There are probably lots of young students fluent in Russian and english; but the sailing web sights will not be the answer. Simon |
