When I reef my main it pulls the "gate" on the mast (the piece that closes of the opening where the sail slugs are inserted) down, leaving the slot open. Then, when I "shake out" the reef and raise my main, a number of the sail slugs fall outside the slot on the mast. I don't know if this is common or a result of the way my reef points are placed. Your experience?

I find that the gate often opens when I drop the main. I had a new main cut with roller cars on the battens so it comes down very quickly Like you I had to check to make sure all was engaged before hoisting otherwise it was one of those embarrassing moments...
In the end (I assume you have a metal rod with 2 thumbscrews??) I decided to drill a couple of pits in the mast for the thumbscrews to engage into. Only deep enough to stop them sliding down the mast and opening the gate - definitely no need to go right through the mast. Seems to have worked so far.

I would suggest that the problem lies with the spacing of the sail slide immediately below the reef point. When you pull down on the reef point it also pulls down on the cloth below the point & thence on the slider. If that distance from reef to slider is too short it puts pressure on the top of the stack of sliders. Just tightening the sail lock does not really address the problem as it still does not allow the reef point to come as low as it should ( ie down to gooseneck level) To prove my point temporarily remove the slider below the reef point & try again. This will not load up the slider stack. The solution is not to remove the slider all together but to move the slider down the sail a couple of inches. If you do not like this option but want to bring the pulley on the reef point down further ( I am assuming you have a pulley) then extend the webbing to the ring & make it longer. If you have a problem tightening the plastic bolts on the gate like I did ( i was concerned the plastic caps would break if overtightened) then replace them with 5mm ss cap head screws & tighten with an allen key |

Alan,
i understand your problem, I nip up the rod and it normally holds. On my long list of things to do, which includes sailing round the world, visiting the East Coast of USA and dating Kylie Minogue; I intend to fabricate two blanks in plastic or aluminium to fill the gate when not in use. I suspect the list as written will be the order I achieve things; but I can dream and maybe the blanks will be made before I get dated by an Aussi rock starlet. Simon |

You had better get a move on because even "Aussi rock starlets" go a bit wrinkly after 50 years or so !!!! |
