Morning Just a quick query, my Hanse 301 is currently out for an anode change, antifoul etc... When she was lifted out, the rubber flap around the sail drive had become detached but was also covered in zebra mussels (they are prevalent in Cardiff Bay). When she came out last I didn't antifoul the rubber flap, should I have done ? Cheers Stu

If you do no longer have the flap do not bother with a new one. Get the sponge from an old cushion. Cut it ( use either a breadknife or hacksaw blade) to fit in the void so it fits around the saildrive & is flush with the hull. Glue it in place with copious amounts of builders adhesive from someone like Wickes. Put the glue around the sides of the void & against the saildrive leg. The sponge should be very slightly compressed
Just before launch smear the face of the sponge liberally with lots of ordinary grease. I use a filler knife to do this. I do this every year. This fills the voids of the sponge & kills any growth. I lost a rubber flap every year & did this in desperation. My sponge is now in its 6th year, cost nothing, the weed falls off for some reason. Possibly because it flexes a little, but it just works !!! Edited by samuel - 21 November 2016 at 08:42 |

If you stick with the flap then it definitely benefits from being antifouled. However, do not use a copper based antifoul. Use the same (aluminium friendly) antifoul that you use on the leg.

There is a fairly cheap specific adhesive for this flap, I cannot remember the name but I will find out. I replaced mine about 3 years ago, and it has stayed stuck since without any problems... I was suggested to us Sikaflex but that was almost worse than useless... I paint it with the same antifoul as I use on the hull, being careful to make sure I do not go over the edge onto the sail drive. Never had any build up of mussels or weed. It's tidy and still well stuck on.
I would suggest that you use the correct adhesive and do the job properly... just a thought. But hey it's not my boat⛵️ 😂😂😉😉 |

I have always using standard contact adhesive. Remove all rests of the old adhesive from bot surfaces. Use a 60 grit sand paper and sand both the hull and rubber flap. Apply a eaven coat of contact adhesive on both parts. Let it dry completly! Put the flap in place and then use a hammer and gently hit every squarmillimeter of the flap and it will bond! This is my standad way of doing it and it will last the full lifetime of the flap.
Never use sikaflex as they do in Greifswald, it will get loose the first year! Jesper

Hi Samuel, What kind of cushion you applied. Is it some thick textile? Does "sponge refer to the shape you cut it?

The sponge (Foam) was from an ordinary settee cushion. It was about 100mm thick but i cut it down. 75mm would be better. (You could always cut a bit out the middle of your bunk cushions that would be a good sponge)I then just cut it to the shape of the void around the sail drive as explained in my post.
For some reason my Nikon camera will not take a decent photo of the green underside & the area around the saildrive of my boat as the light seems to confuse the camera (Or the person operating it). I think I need some lessons from Johan Edited by samuel - 15 December 2016 at 19:18 |
