Does anyone have a diagram of hard points in the hull (not deck)? I need to install a thru-hull for the watermaker this winter and need to know what hard points exist on the port side utility room/aft head area. I have the deck diagram but it doesn't tell me the hull hard points near the waterline.

I don't think there are any hard points (aluminium plates) in the hull area, underwater or above water. So drill away to your hearts content.

I'm not talking about aluminum backing plates. I meant solid glass as opposed to cored laminate. As I understand it, there are hard points where its solid glass so you can put thru hulls or other hardware in place.

If there are any hard point you will se them. Just look at any thrue hull (black water, sink etc) and you understand what I mean. They just skip a section of the core and put the inner layers of the glass directly on the outer. So you will se a notable difference on the laminate. If there's no hard points I would decide where to put the thru hull and drill a pilote hole. Then use a large (150-200mm) hole saw and cut out the inner laminate and the core. Then grind the surface around to a nice taper (20:1) and finally glass it. Finally just drill thrue the pilot hole with the righ size hole saw.

In my H400 all areas below waterline I know are solid glassfiber, not sandwhich. At least where I have added through hulls and BT.

This would be slightly above the waterline, for the brine discharge of the watermaker. Ideally, right at the bootstripe. I was told solid below the waterline as well, but this is close, so.....not sure...

Our factory fitted watermaker is in the forepeak and the overboard comes out about 75mm (3 inches) above the upper boot topping stripe - see image below. On the inside they had taken out the inner laminate and core and added some layers of fiberglass and then fitted the over board. Not sure why they have put in at this height - I assume it is more about being about to fit the valve in and allow access to operate the overboard valve and to have the overboard above water when motorsailing and making water. In our aft ensuites the sink drain goes overboard in about the middle of the upper boot topping stripe. I gather your stbd aft ensuite sink would do the same thing. If you look at this over board you will see they have also removed the inner laminate and core and added additional glass on the inside before fitting the sink overboard. You will probably make water whilst you are motoring or motorsailing so I would think you need to have the watermaker overboard above the waterline when heeled over on the port side so there is no restriction for the water to go overboard. |

I got the below diagram from Hanse yesterday. It seems to show the hard points in the C3 utility room layout. I'm assuming the annotations are correct, so if someone thinks otherwise, let me know.. I'll verify with Henry Bleck at the factory. FWIW...

In our "ensuite" option for this area these hard points coincide with - 1. lower aft = sink drain overboard. 2. lower FWD = sullage tank drain for the aft one. We done have the second fwd through hull in this diagram. 3. upper FWD = sullage tank vent. So these hard point must be there on all boats regardless of the use of this space. |
