Only late last year I bought a demonstration boat that came with an in-mast furling sail. While I have never used one I thought it would suit our intended sailing around the Whitsunday islands. The convenience is great but I am having trouble with the battens poking through the sail. We have repaired two tears and now need to do another two. I see this as dangerous as a batten could get caught in the furler if we hadn't noticed that it was poking out.
Have others seen this happen? We have a Elvstrom FCL mainsail but I am guessing it is an issue with the type of sail rather than the brand. I am considering whether I should make the shift to a traditional lazy-jack, with the power winch it isn't that hard! Thoughts? |

We've got Elvstrom, unbattened, furling sail on our 445, used about 180 days at sea in total, and I'm very happy so far.
I recon it is ideal for single handed or shorthanded sailing and the ability to reef down to a handkerchief is very convenient and adds to safety.
