Dear Members,

On this moment is my 385 on land in a hall.

During cleaning, I talked with the people on the yard about a Thruster.

My proposal was an exturn due to the fact I don't want a retractable.

The people on the yard told me that a tunnel thruster was also possible. (I has to be at least 10 cm under the waterline, 15 cm is ideal and there is space for 14 cm they told me and they did also the measuring)

I would be a 75 kg Thruster.

What do you think about this proposal?

Regards Chris Gradussen

At a risk  of providing un unwanted advice - don't install the thruster.

After a failure of the thruster on our 445 I was forced to learn to handle the boat without one. A year of extensive cruising and berthing in various conditions in the Med and I don't even think about it. And 445 is a bit larger boat. Since the thruster was under warranty when the failure happened, it is being replaced now, otherwise I'd just order to seal the hole back.

Chris, I have Exturn on my 345. I am very satisfied, it is very efficient, very quiet ( you can't hear it in the boat next to me ) and never let me down. It was installed in Greifswald by a Hanse subcontractor, who has done this on a regular base. It has its own 90 Ah Battery upfront charged by a Sterling B2B charger. Operating is done by a joystick at the helm station or via wireless remote, which I appreciate more and more since I have also connected the anchor einch to it. Installation took 2 days.

Hi Chris,

i own a 385 and made the installation of a fixed one by myself,  there is not much space and you will recognize how strong your boat is when you make the holes. Honestly, i would have it seen in some conditions it can be helpful, the usage rate is low so you have to consider it it's worth. My personal vision was, the moment when i need it will only be in extreme situations, therefor i made a bit an over dimension with a 95 K Thruster. Whoww, works fine, Thers is one negative point, if the water tank in the front is empty, the Thruster can take some air and the effectiveness is gone. I will add some anchor chain what helps is this case. If you need some pictures, i will try to upload later on.
best regards,

I have a lot of problems with my thruster even it is 8month old.
You can not see if it is on or off. After exact 2 Minutes it switches off automatically without any notice.
Pushing the little buttons is very difficult and you dont know if it is on or off.

Hello Ida,
why don't you replace your panel with a joystick ? I was initially sceptical ( will it withstand mechanical abuse by lines , helmsmen and unexperienced guests ?) and was happy to see my wireless remote as a back up. In my 4th season I can say that it is good as in the beginning.

I did not find the auto switch off disturbing. I push it before entering a known or unknown harbor to test the system and again just before backing into a slip.

@fendant and @Carlosailfan

Thank you for your infomatation. an Exturn is also an option. Looking to the power (75kgf -80 kgf) should be sufficient.

Regarding to the batteries. Did both of you install an external batterie bank (for example in the front before the watertank) or did you connect to te service batterie?

Yes, I have a 90 Ah AGM Battery in front of the water tank. The solenoid and the remote receiver is there installed as well. This battery is charged from the service batteries via a Sterling Bat to Bat charger.
