I went through the same decision making process about 2 months ago. The high price of the simrad system was again my reason for considering the Raymarine. However after posting the question on the YBW website i bit the bullet and went for the simrad. In my mind, the Hanse range especially the new ones are designed to take the direct drive motor. All the wiring is in place and most of the holes are already predrilled. Try working out what you earn at work per hour and then work out how many more hours it will take you to fit a linear drive over the direct one. That should always be considered when costing equipment.

talking about money , the difference is about 1500 Euro`s
That is worth thinking about!
The onley thing you can think about is wat is best for the boat , and then wath is it worth to you?
The sinking of the Megawat is on this moment an exemple that wass given by somone on the forum that makes me consider wath to do .
And since that was a case on its own (or are ther more exemples?, even from different yachts) I am still thinking of the cheap version .
To me it is Raymarine for the computer and its belonging gear , but it stil might be a Jeffa lineair drive unit because off its simpel under the hatch mounting method.
Greetings Marcel

igood idea marcel. if you pick up the dd1/dd15 drive unit and the rudder feedback unit then you will negate the problems caused by installation. However you then face a little compatability problem with interfacing simrad and raymarine. I'm sure ive seen a thread somewhere about this. Theoetically you need an at10 convertor however in reality i dont think its as easy. good luck anyway. Also from experience. You can shop around for the parts and you will get a good deal. I think my complete Simrad system was a little over 2000. I was originally quoted 2500 plus installation.

The Simrad drive unit will work with virtually any appropriately sized autopilot processor. It will certainly work with a Raymarine. However, a Simrad rudder reference unit may not provide the signal the Raymarine is expecting, so it is best to obtain the rudder reference unit from the same manufacturer as the autopilot processor. Hope this helps.

Hallo Nick
I have onley the dept and speed Simrad IS 12 on the steering pedestral.
I am going to mount a new dept and speed ST 60 and windset over the entrence off the cabin and so the simrad on the pedestral will becom repeaters off a complete Raymarine system.
I hade a compleet Raymarine set on my former boat and I just think it is better than the IS 12 I have on the moment.
Greetings Marcel

actually while i remember it i had a discussion with Navico about the output current required to drive the dd15. Apparently for the 370 it is higher than that required for the 320 and 350 that i have. You need to check that your autopilot computer will be ok with this drive unit.
If you download the dd15 manual from the Simrad website it has a table in it about the currents required. Navico will also be able to help.apparently if you get it wrong it ends up buring out the computer.

The DD15 whith the rudder feedback unit on top will not fit. Use the DD1 from Jefa. Works whith Simrad B&G and Raymarine.
I used 4 houers in the dark of the night in Greifswald when installing my autopilot.

Marcel
If you are going to use the Raymarine system, I would have choosen the new system they have launched, ST 70 ( based on NMEA 2000)
This is a much more flexible system

I have been checking te posibilities of an underdeck fitting of a raymarine lineair drive.
Symply sayd ... it is not possible without major modifications so I will not do so , and we are going to buy the Jeffa drive unit and fit it under the hatch.
