I once had a theory that the fact that the airport in Copenhagen is very close to the very narrow waters that make one of the two the main channels between Denmark and Sweden called Öresund can make the winds gusty. That is what I have experienced on the few occassions I have sailed there but I may be wrong in assuming that the gusts come from the planes.

A friend of mine thought that my theory was ridiculous so I abondoned it quickly.

Hi P-B

That video is absolutely hilariousLOL

@Johan, you must be referring to "Drogden", which is the channel between the island of Amager and Sealand (Copenhagen). Yes, the planes heading for Copenhagen Airport come close, but I think you have to be more conserned with the big ships, which are constantly passing by. Actually, every time I have to pas Drogden I feel like crossing a highwayShocked

Great picture!

Ole,

Ah, I thought Drogden was just the lighthouse. The previous picture was taken in the channel between Saltholm and Amager. I don't think you are allowed to sail in the waters between Amager and Själland (Swedish spelling)? It is true that the area is very busy though.

OHH - Yes, you are right! I meant between Amager and Saltholm (NOT Sealand) of course - silly meEmbarrassedEmbarrassedEmbarrassed

Actually, I believe the lighthouse Drogden (in the picture) is named after the channel. You are also right that it is the lighthouse that we normally connect with the name "Drogden".

BTW, I think it is actually possible to sail between Amager and Sealand at least in small boats (right into the copenhagen harbour area).

As for racing in the Drogden channel, In June 2009 I encountered the entire fleet of VO70s racing past me and the Amani entirely without any assistance from helicoptersLOLLOL

Years ago there was a brilliant idea to build another airport on the sands of Foulness in the Thames estuary in the UK.
One of the many objections was that the residue from the jet engines would rot sails
Has anyone sailing regularly near an airport noticed this ?
Presumably, if there is any residue it would show up on white sails fairly quickly

I previously sailed on an inland lake in Nashville, TN that was about 2 miles from an airport.  All of the boats were sprinkled with black soot from the engine exhaust of the planes.  Sail covers, too.  It could be washed off with boat cleaning detergent, but  over the years the cumulative effect was slightly darkened the decks.
